Abstract Spirit : Liquid Dimensions Change

Comatose Vigil with a bigger sense of epicness.

Abstract Spirt hail from Moscow and play funeral death/doom... not very much new here, especially if we tell you the name of the label: Solitude Productions. Lately, Russia has seen a flourishing of new metal bands, in particular in the doom subgenre. Abstract Spirit fits exactly in the funeral deathish category. Slow, imposing, crushing tunes, underlined by powerful growling, majestic guitar riffs and supporting keys.

But let's give you a bit of background on the band: consisting of 3 musicians - Stellarghost (keys, backing vocals) and Hater (bass/guitar, both ex Twilight Is Mine, black metal combo) and A. K. (Comatose Vigil, vocals/drums) Ė Abstract Spirit were formed in the suburbs of Moscow in 2006. This is their first effort, straight to CD, with no promo preceding this recording.

The graphics are as usual impressive, with swirling shades of blue surrounding a small, blackened sun. The booklet is equally pleasing, with photos of the musicians and lyrics. If feels like a quality and professional product, no doubt about it.

But what about the music? Well, it's funeral with doom/death influences (or is it the other way 'round?)... well executed, intense, atmospheric, crushing (I have to stop using that word...). And yes, you can hear a Comatose Vigil influence here, which is no bad thing. The melodies flow relentlessly, beautiful magma of sound supported by melting guitars and keys, especially in the epic 'Ruined'. I have only one small criticism: given its length, the album can get a tad tiresome at times. Having said that, each track is varied enough to keep your finger well away from the skip button.

This is a well-made recording (with good production) and I can only recommend it. Fans of Shape of Despair, Colosseum and Comatose Vigil will enjoy immensely. OK, itís not incredibly original, but you canít have everything...
