|There are many a doom/death band that have listed Celtic Frost as one of their most important influences. Being one of the major early bands that played slow death metal probably explains why a lot of bands look up to them. However, Celtic Frost themselves were never a doom metal band. Sure they've done some doomy tracks and perhaps, outside of my knowledge, even some real doom tracks but their main sound lies well rooted in death metal.|
As Celtic Frost has also influenced a lot of bands from both the black and death metal genres, you'll find a lot of them on the tracklist for this complilation. The album actually includes quite a few big names. With Closedown the tribute even manages to include an industrial track. Luckily the doom side is represented as well with the bands Cianide, 13 and even Opeth.
Cianide used to be a doom/death band before turning solely to death metal. Here they fish for those roots and play a raw, dark and true doom/death cover of 'Dawn Of Meggido'. This track just reinforces my opinion that Cianide play better music as a doom band then they do a death metal band.
Opeth share many similarities with Celtic Frost. They've never made an entire doom release but they have recorded doom tracks and have influenced doom metal bands on a large scale. Their cover of 'Circle Of The Tyrants' is one of Opeth's real doom tracks but it remains true to their usual style: mournful, weeping, and dark, with strong gothic metal elements.
Celtic Frost also had a strong effect on sludgecore, hence the appearance of the doom/sludger's 13. Their cover of 'Triumph Of Death' is the last track ever made by the band before breaking up. While a tad more uptempo than their usual stuff, it is still harsh, raw and very extreme in it's execution. A very worthy end to this compilation.
