|Warchetype is a five piece that hails from Barcelona. After obtaining their doom credentials in the Spanish underground they have now released their debut album. While I must admit that the album title made me skeptical, it turns out that the lyrics aren't satanic. They seem to be mostly occult based and focused on the doom that will befall earth...or as they put it; "World's coming doom. Trust in doom."|
The music can perhaps best be summarized as a combination of Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre, Heretic's Fork and fellow Spanish doomsters Orthodox. In other words, their style of traditional doom is very slow and dark with skullcrushing heaviness and a slight tendency towards droning. The vocalist has a powerful voice which sounds much like Scott "Wino" Weinrich and while there are really no weak points on this CD, the vocals are clearly one of the band's strongest assets.
The general aura of the music is incredibly headbanger friendly while mixing aggression with a slight relaxation. It's perhaps savage in a way but most of all it's enshrouded in crushing darkness.
The band has a tendency towards longer tracks and with just one exception they are all over ten minutes long. Indeed the Warchetype train chugs along at a very doomy pace but when it passes the ground rumbles. With their high quality musicianship Warchetype is likely to become one of the bigger bands amongst the heavier traditional doomsters. Fans of any of the bands I mentioned earlier should find this interesting.
