Profetus : Saturnine

A majestic, intense and mesmerising march into oblivion

Profetus is the brainchild of A. Mäkinen e S.Kujansuu, who founded the band in midwinter 2006. Originally released on tape (200 hand-numbered copies), ‘Saturnine’ is deeply rooted in the classic funeral genre, but with a less orthodox approach. The demo comprises of only two tracks, 'The Skull of Silence', which clocks at 12:30, and 'Winter Solstice', even longer, at 15:49. Each track is an oppressive-depressing journey into the devastation of solitude, bleakness and despair. They both start slowly and develop into a beautiful, raw melody, punctuated by solemn drums and guitar, and the suffocating, rasping vocals of Mr Mäkinen. It’s a majestic, intense and mesmerising march into oblivion. Fans of Skepticism, Worship, Thergothon, Unholy and Esoteric (to a certain extent) – and bleak funeral doom in general – won’t be disappointed. My only complaint is the brevity of the opus, which leaves you wanting more. Let’s hope that their full-length, which should be released later this year, will quench our unsuppressible thirst.
