Volition : Volition

Volition's demo is a first in two ways. It's the band's debut release as well as the first demo released by TotalRust Music. The demo is limited to a production of 120 hand-numbered copies with two different versions of the cover art available. The cover art varies because the band retails a different version of the demo than the label does.

These doom/sludge Britts play their stuff frowning and slow and their sound is not far removed from that of underground legends 13. Lyrically, the songs may consist of less subject matter relating to female injustices and the music might be slightly more melodic and heavy but other than that, Volition pretty much take up the torch that 13 left behind so many years ago. This is indeed filthier and nastier than anything achievable by tagging it with a mixture of sewage and tar.

Undoubtedly, there are many in the sludge underground who'd smash something or share a needle rejoicing from this news and to this reviewer's ears, the music will do little to lower those expectations. As usual, no one can really replace the original but volition make one heck of a good attempt. It's also noteworthy that even this short demo surpasses the length of nearly everything 13 ever got around to making (the exception being their demo tape). In addition to the 120 copies available for purchase, the demo can be listened to in it's entirety on the band's MySpace page: http://myspace.com/volition666.
