In this third split in what I've called The Master/Apprentice Split Series (see why here) it's hard to tell who's the "apprentice". It's true that Ironboss is the less experienced with Bad Preachers starting their journey as early as 1982. Still, Ironboss has a decade on the rock n' roll road and thus more than enough experience to be called masters in their own right.
Bluesrock with a hint of punk. That's what you get with Ironboss. It's almost like a filthier, harder, ruder and non-pop version of early ZZ Top. Everyone knows their instruments and the whiskey'd-up bassy voice of Chris Rhoten really top it of. When he gets to duo with Scott "Wino" Weinrich on the cover of Grand Funk Railroad's 'Walk Like a Man', it's not a case of Wino honouring a band by a guest appearance, it's Wino aknowledging a song and a band that does his talents more than justice. I know I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to this genre, but this is the best blues rock band I've heard to date.
Bad Preachers hold the same filth and highway style as Ironboss, but their style is somewhat reversed. They play Sex Pistols-like punk rock with strong blues rock influences. Despite their Sex Pistols similarities they keep a high quality musicianship, which Sex Pistols wanted to avoid. Bad Preachers' a very headbanger friendly band who knows when to show of and when to keep it simple. Not many strings attached here.
Unlike the two previous splits this has nothing to do with doom metal, I just included them as well since they were a part of RocknRollRadio's promo package to us. However, like the previous two splits, the choice is musically impeccable. RocknRollRadio is a label who knows what they are doing when it comes to rolling rock. I was honestly naive enough to think that most rock genres had dwindled into bands following the older gods in their every steps. The case now seems to me to be the opposite, the rock scene has actually improved beyond the old masters and are now too good for mainstream...
