|World Funeral is the brainchild of two members (one now ex-member) from the Italian death metal band Mortal Fungus. They mix doom/death with 80's traditional doom and core inspired riffage. In many ways their closest resemblance would be Blood Farmers, who used similar pounding riffage, raw male vocals and lyrics relating to horror movies. Both bands also frequently use clips from different movies in the tracks. The main difference would be that while Blood Farmers had similarities to Metallica's self titled album, these guys have chosen a more core based approach.|
The demo cover is a total oxymoron when compared to the music, which is quite dark for a traditional doom band. The only link that I can see between the tracks and the purple cover is that both are just about unique in the genre. No doubt most doomsters would have to admit that they haven't heard or seen anything like it before. However, originality is always a sign of promise in a new band.
The band definitely has a strong groove orientation as well as most of the elements that they incorporate. I'm sure this will be a large part of what people will be looking for in them. A mediocre production quality grants it some problems and the demo will require a few spins to grow on someone due to the production. If the band makes a future effort with more power added to the instruments then it will be an instant success, according to myself. The track 'Zombie Priest' stands out as an example of what the band is capable of. It's also the only track which is really catchy and this type of music needs that. Lots of promise in this two-piece and I'm looking forward to hearing their next effort.
