┌den : Ciclo

┌den is a dark ambient project from a guy going under the moniker ▄denentun. The track names are written in Chilean Spanish, as ▄denetun hails from Santiago.

Apparently the music once had elements of black metal, but most of the tracks here contain no metal elements at all, black or otherwise. The exceptions are 'Ciclo' and 'Angustia 2006', which are rife with monotonous funeral doom riffage. Here, it's also apparent that the black metal influences aren’t all gone, as the guitar part contains all the bleakness for which black metal is known and loved.

This EP is permeated with a sense of melancholy and nihilism. It’s as if one is torn between the urge to grieve and the urge to die. A lot of the track titles touch on existential musings and negative emotions, so this may well be what the composer wanted to communicate.

▄denentun says that he takes influence from bands such as Until Death Overtakes Me and Burzum, and it shows, though the music really falls closer to the former than the latter. It comes as no surprise then that I’m recommending this for fans of Stijn Van Cauter's works. It should be noted, however, that this is more of an ambient release than it is a strictly funeral doom one.
