My Severance : My Severance

My Severance, a band from Paris, France, hereby present their second demo recording consisting of three goth metal songs. They've managed to get one of their songs, 'I Pray', on the compilation 'Underground Rising' released by Cheap Noize records. I recommend that everyone check out their website at www.myseverance.com, since it's looking very good and professional.

Now to the musical part. They've probably got a lot of different influences. If you listen carefully you can hear much more in the music than, I think, was the intention to start with. Goth, metal, pop - you name it. The song structures are straightforward and have a typical "vers course" appearance. It is well preformed and tight.

Is it any good? My answer: unfortunately not.

The power chord riffs get kind of boring in the long run. If the keyboard had been used to do something more that just follow the guitars they might have gotten away with the monotone riffing. That is however not the case here. Even all this could have been forgiven and forgotten if the vocals had been outstanding. There is some hit potential in these songs after all, but... David's voice is not meant for metal of any kind. There is a growl at the beginning of 'I Pray' which sounds good, and the intro of 'Man Born And Fall' fits his voice well. As soon as the distorted guitars enter the game, it's a lost case. More growls could have saved them a little. Better luck next time!
