Re: Hangman's Chair - "Banlieue Triste"
I need my Hangman's Chair fix! To a non native speaker, the band sounds more viciously seductive than desperately dark. I like very, very much the tone of the singer, moaning in a melancholic ant bewitching fashion. Unique stuff!

It's clearly a massive improvement on the previous albums, but I find the long instrumental parts rather tiring and boring... predictable and pointless. Having said that, when it works, it's pretty good and enjoyable.
P.S. Is it doom?

I find his voice oddly sexy. I really enjoy how clean his tone is, compared to the dirtier or nasal sounding male vocals that are more common in stoner/doom. It's easy to find female vocalists who have pleasant singing voices in the style, but not quite so many clean male vocalists.

His voice reminds me of another singer, but f*** me if I can remember... it's driving me nuts!

Acid Bath's singer, maybe? I've always seen Hangman's Chair as their only heirs. HC' singer has a very distinctive grunge style. The reverb effects on his voice tend to make it smoother, but the overall tone is very much alike.

Mmh, Apostle of Solitude comes to mind:

you know when it's stuck in your head and it's driving you crazy... and then you think you've found it and it sounds a bit like that, but not quite and you wonder what kind of mushrooms you were consuming at the time... but then, I only like mushroom risotto...

I can't place what it is exactly, but something about their This is Not Supposed to Be Positive album reminds me significantly of Katatonia's Tonight's Decision. There are some slight grunge and gothic metal vibes there that make me wonder if my favorite Swedes had some sort of influence on them.
