Not really a depressing movie, just one of the best sci-fi films ever. :D

21 grams is a real downer, IMO.

Shoah: Its a 4 part, 9.5 hour long documentary on the holocaust. Consisting of interviews with survivors, concentration camp guards, random citizens... It doesn't get more depressing than this folks.

Having been flooded with the Holocaust subject, respective documentaries and endless as well as pointless discussions throughout most of my schooldays, I've really had my fill of this shit and no need for any of it anymore... :|

(I'm not trying to blackball your recommendation, this was just a side note.)

Not really a depressing movie I'd say. Pretty mind-fucking, with some distressing sections here and there, but the aforementioned Requiem For A Dream is definitely more depressing.
A LOT more depressing.

Crying is for pussies I guess. But I DID cry when I first saw RfaD.

Sex and Lucia.

Has a lovely atmosphere to it. The gratuitous nudity does not cheapen it at all, it's a great movie.

Recommend some movies here and write about them too, would help :)

something i've been want to say about Requiem for a Dream, don't read if you like the movie, also this is off topic and should be in Alcohol, Drugs & Politics:
I don't want to troll or anything, but I am kind of sick of hearing about Requiem for a Dream. I think by itself the movie can be effective to tell a story about the characters circumstances and no more than that. But if it's about the negativity of addiction, I think it is very ineffective and more likely promote drug usage to teenagers than dispersuade, and it has no effect to those who are already doing it. It's just my first hand experience of knowing some very addicted people during my youth. Also many teens are dwelled to those images, they want to experience the bad side of things. That is why I think anitdrugs commercials on tv are ineffective and pointless as well. I would prefer this asian anti-drug commmercial I've seen in 1990 on tv, bony people sucking blood off into syringe, people with aids with dark spots growing around their body, skulls and death, and coupled with the freekiest high pitch music ever.

As for being as a movie experience in general I didn't like it very much, generally due to the camera directing I find distracting. For the same topic, I would recommend A Scanner Darkly, which not only acheive at protraying it's message, but manage to create a more entertaining viewing experience.

If depressive in term of mood then I have to say Once Upon a Time in America.

Hello,
As I read your question I remembered how The Dead Zone by Cronenberg assails me each time I see it. The shadow of fate haunts this film so strongly that the watcher is frozen in fascination. Johnny Smith lost all during a 5 years coma, and back to consciousness he never could regain anything in life. Could he change the history thanks to his lonely visions ? Walken playing Johnny looks like dead in the pictures which are coldly beautiful. His previous life lies in the past. Very recommended if not yet seen.
Moreover I experienced memory loss, and this film turned into a strange resonance since then.

The Brave ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118768/ ) is pretty slow and depressive.
Also some of Bunuel's 1960s' films.

Johnny Got His Gun

Edit: It's the movie that showed in Metallica clip (One)

Some of my fav quotes:

Doesn't this one remind you Anathema - Crestfallen lyrics?

''Inside me I'm screaming, nobody pays any attention. If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could yell for help, but nobody would help me.''

-Ask him what his name is.
-He says kill me. Over and over again: Kill me.

A little too artsy sometimes, but generally depressing. You can actually watch the whole thing -

"Das Leben der Anderen" or "The Lives of Others" was very depressing but one of the best films I saw in 2007. I really recommend it to everyone. It's about the East German secret police and their observation techniques just before the Berlin Wall fell showing the truly dark past of the DDR. It is a sad and beautiful story which focuses on a high ranking Stasi officer who is sent to investigate a writer and his lover and becomes slowly involved in their lives.

I found it all the more poignant because I had visited some of the former KGB headquarters in Eastern Europe the same year and the film was so realistic in representing these kinds of places of interrogation and imprisonment. It shows how peoples lives were so destroyed by the political regimes of their coutries.

I think the most depressing film I've ever seen was "Lilya 4-ever" which is about the poverty, humiliation and depression in which many people in the former USSR republics live, child prostitution and slavery. It was the hardest film to watch. I don't know if you want anything as realistic and awful as this kind of thing but it was an incredile film and if you really want to witness some real depression then it is here.
