Ouija: Origin of Evil http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4361050/ best horror I've watched in a very long time... the trailer spoils some good scares, so I'd skip it. it's also a prequel to an "Ouija" movie, but I recommend watching this first. you basically don't need to bother with the latter, very poorly written.

I saw it a couple of days ago, before I saw your post actually.

I don't share your enthusiasm. The photograph is nice, the reconstruction of the early sixties is convincing, the actors deliver a flawless performance, but all that coating can't hide the disappointing weakness of the script. Nothing new, no new ideas, all has been seen and re-seen and re-re-seen again. It's an idleness that annoys me terribly because as a fan of horror films, it makes my interest for the whole genre decline... :/

I'm with you on the decline of the genre, but this worked for me... I didn't jump or anything, but I enjoyed it.

I'm on a horror spree lately, have watched Oculus, Jug Face, The autopsy of Jane Doe and Ouija (that origin of evil is a prequel to), but did not like them much... Jug Face is good, but mostly a backwater indie film with blood, not "proper" horror, and Oculus has a good/novel idea (you might like that), but, again, not scary (same guy who did OOoE)... I'm thinking of trying the Poltergeist remake, but the reviews are atrocious.

I've seen Occulus a long time ago; I think I liked it... I liked the character of the redhead girl, her obsessiveness... (same actress as in Ouija btw).
Seen The Autopsy too. I really like the first 20 minutes of it, but then the script fails to make the best use of all its potential (I'm thining of the 3 corpses particularly); what is also a flaw to me here is that you guess the nature of the girl far before the two examiners... The SFX are excellent though.

Lately, I watched Under the Shadow; an Iranian movie; very, very nice that one. The story of a mother and her daughter living in an apartment building in Teheran during the Iran/Irak war... Very simple, simple plot, simple tricks, but effective, genuinely frightening and still holding a poetic side.
I watched Don't Breathe too. If you forget about one or two far-fetched details, the story is quite believable, and that is already some little miracle! It's almost a no-exit situation, a house inhabited by a blind man - which is quite convenient to place your camera where you like since there's just the minimum of furniture, a couple of hot spots, cellar, cloakroom, kitchen, bathroom which draw a sketch map that you quickly have in mind. The whole works a bit too calmly maybe, a kind of calm tension :D (except for the ending). I don't like the main actor though, but the film is worth watching.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4255304/ good/disgusting Lovecraftian horror. bit pissed they don't give credit when 80% of the movie is HPL, but still probably the best HPL movie I've seen...

watched Life http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5442430/ and liked it, sort of a remake of Alien.

also watched A Dark Song http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4805316/ and found it very disappointing. unusual ending, but I wouldn't recommend anyone watches it to get there.

have heard good things about Get Out, but not seen it yet.

Get out is really good. I watched A Dark Song also, it's too meandering and the final sequence is very cliché, but the angel has quite a presence for sure. Although the whole stuff is too cute and bigoted for a so-called horror film.

did not like Get Out... did not live up to the (incredible) hype for me. I sort of enjoyed A Dark Song, but it left me wanting.

I've also watched Southbound http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4935334/ which I'd recommend.

decent, but not great:
Where the Devil Hides http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2290739/

stinkers to avoid:
Yellow brick road www.imdb.com/title/tt1398428/
The Resident www.imdb.com/title/tt1334102/
Apartment 1303 www.imdb.com/title/tt1540767/
The Possession of Michael King http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2282016/

I quite liked It comes at night; I saw it more than a year ago and I'mnot too sure what I liked about it. The story is very simple, but told with elegance and sobriety.
Did you see the new Halloween? Curious about that one.
I don't know Mandy, what's that movie?

Off the top of my head, this year, three flicks stood out: Annihilation, Paranoïa and Ghostland.

Post Re: horror movie recommendations

I went into it comes at night thinking I'd see a completely different movie, that's what killed it for me. the trailer is for a different film...

shockingly for a horror fan, I don't follow any of the big franchises like halloween, elm street, etc. is the new one any good? my friends did not like it...

mandy is an overtly stylized, beautifully shot revenge/horror movie with nicholas cage that literally everyone is buzzing about. the plot is retarded, though, and its pseudo-occult leanings are laughable. waste of time for me.

I quite liked annihilation, but the ending was a little meh. not a step up from ex-machina.

paranoia you mean distorted with the goddess of doom? :D I will check it out!

nah! Not even that one - that I've started but failed to get to the end; she's super sexy and adorable, but not quite a very good actress, and the film is plain bad!
No I mean UNSANE by Soderbergh; Paranoïa must be the French title... :D

I recommend Ghostland, with Mylene Farmer, by the French director who made Martyrs. Clever film that one.

Mind you, I haven't seen the new Halloween, but if you're a complete rookie in this matter, watch the first one by any means! First Nightmare on Elm Street is very good too. Two seminal works that you can't ignore, definitely!

Why did you hate it? Direct-in-your-face horror scenes that aren't just random teenage exhibitionism but founded on believable psychological background, cleverly unveiled on top of it is rare enough to be supported imo!

UNSANE is more a thriller than a horror film btw.

Another film that is worth watching, especially because of its aesthetical values, rather than for its storytelling qualities (rather poor) or even for its horrific sides (scarcely existing) is Hagazussa, a German film very much inspired by Eggers' the witch and Jonathan Glazer.'s under the Skin. It's basically a folk-ish atmospheric thriller, beautifully shot in a European mountainous setting that gives the film its pagan, mystical aura. The very slow pace makes it a hypnotizing experience, but don't expect any cold shivers down the spine - but once maybe. Still, it's worth watching for its unusal austere personality, if anything.

ghostland just did not work for me... it is indeed novel and brutal, but I didn't like it.

Hagazussa looks right up my street, thank you! :)

Aterrados - that's a movie I definitley recommend.

While not perfect by any stretch, it conveys a strange overall atmosphere, really bizarrely devilish; the kind of unease David Lynch has managed to tackle with Eraserhead for instance, but whitout any preposterous leanings - it's dead serious on the contrary... Although the story is lacking in terms of clarity, this I admit, and follows a rather erratic flow, the few horror scenes it installs are totally Lovercraftian in spirit if not in their graphic aspects though... It's about a vague, bleak and ortherwordly menace the script never cares to explain or even develop. Maybe the director isn't a script genius, but that's not what pure horror is about anyhow and, while the founding principles are rather traditional - haunted houses, several of them, he sure can boast about a strong visual sense. The acting is correct too. All in all, it is a great fear-inducing show!

And I saw Halloween 2018 the other day, and it stinks on all levels. :D
