can someone please recommend me some real scary horror flicks. I appreciate older movies from 70s and 80s but they don't scare me at all (only exception would be The Exorcist)... here are some horror I would like to recommend: Ringu, Ju-on, Martyrs, Rec, Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, The Last Exorcism, Pulse, Shutter...

Re: horror movie recommendations
well, the one film that has really scared me these last years, you named it: that's rec. the last 10 minutes are just the scariest thing I've ever seen! But the effect on me was as much strong as I knew nothing about what I had to expect from it.
The exorcist keeps its effects intact.
mmh, tough to be scared when you have such an experience in horror films.
Evil Dead I is scary, no doubt. there are some scenes in Creep with Franka Potente that are really scary... also, the tv scene in Ring

That is one of the scariest things I've ever seen. I still think I should not have read 'The Exorcist'. Too much. I doubt I'll ever watch the movie.
The original 'Psycho' has a great creepy value.

Re: horror movie recommendations
Here are a few I liked (meaning they made me jump ):
It came out last year, but it's filmed to look like it was made in the 80s (the dvd comes in a vhs box, too!). Please note that it's also really, really slow. The end makes up for it though.
Really creepy, based on (one of the theories about) The Bell Witch (for whom almost every other metal band has written a song)...
Two words: "swimming" and "pool"... (DON'T watch the american remake!)
Nice/scary twist on a usual (horror) theme...
Also, and judging by your recommendations, you might like other asian horror movies like the original Shutter, Dark Water, etc.
And of course I'm not mentioning "classics" like The Omen, Poltergeist, Don't look now, etc.
Happy frightening!

Re: horror movie recommendations
House of 1000 corpses is pretty creepy, especially the scene when the girl meets Dr. Satan. That scene alone made the movie worth watching to me. Overall I much prefered the sequel, The Devils Rejects. Not scary really but a great movie.
Hellraiser 1 and 2. They got progressively worse after these two, especially since different directors and casts kept coming in. The first 2 are excellent and much more than just a slasher. The concept is really good and quite creepy.
Friday 13th Part 6. I think it was 6. This is the only good one of the series in my opinion. The ones before are just slasher movies with dumb horny teenagers and plot holes everywhere.

those who watched Pulse, take the time to watch the film that inspired it: the japonese Kairo, much better!

I've seen the original one from 1978, haven't seen the remake yet, that was brutal !
I can recommend Eden Lake, quite realistic which makes it even more interesting.

Re: horror movie recommendations
Think the last film that scared me was The Crazys.
Kill list wasn't the horror film i was expecting, not scary.*SPOILER* It didn't make fucking sense! Think the director got his ideas from Lost, basically im guessing it was the dream of some post-traumatic stress Iraq mercenary. Still 4/5 for the film.
Demons... the zombies looking up the stairs at once scene in REC etc and been trapped in a cinema were taken from this, but its a bit cheesy.

I find "White Noise" to be really scary in places even though the story is kind of stereotypical. "Rose Red" has its moments too. "The Descent" was a nice watch, as well, and the sequel isn't bad either, albeit a bit too gory for my taste. I totally second "Hellraiser", one of my favourites; never got the chance to watch any of the sequels, though. Also, I strongly support abigail's ages-old-recommendation of "Let the Right One In" - actually, I don't find it scary at all, but it's one of the most intense and captivating movies I've seen over the past few years. It was also a great experience that I could watch it in Swedish and actually understand all of it. At any rate it touched me deeply... A true piece of art.

Re: horror movie recommendations
I watched "The Broken" last night. To be precise, I watched 2/3 of it and then decided to watch the rest the next morning because it was too unsettling! Granted, I am easily unsettled when watching such films alone late in the evening, especially when I'm already somewhat tired. Still, this one has a singularly dense, oppressive atmosphere. Its approach is uncompromising, so you will have to look hard for a single gleam of light throughout its 88 minutes (figuratively speaking). The music is very effective and well composed, even if not very subtle all of the time. But also in cinematographic terms this is an excellent (or dare I say: beautiful) piece of work - the composition of images, the camera work and editing, the selection of locations, production design etc., everything is right in place and adds to the overall impression. Furthermore, the better part of the film works fine without flashy effects and relies on well arranged details instead. The ending was somewhat disappointing and didn't make perfect sense (and the basic idea isn't really new, of course), but I can still recommend this to anyone interested in a subtly creepy experience. The beautiful British accent was another plus for me. After all those formulaic horror films that have been flooding the market over the last few years, I found this to be a very positive and refreshing surprise.

Re: horror movie recommendations
I recently watched some Thai horror movies on youtube. The image quality is not that great of course, but it's fun.
I recommend Shutter, a ghost strory like the Thai movie industry seems very fond of. The ghost is always a woman with long dark hair and she comes to haunt the livings till she's released of the burden that is prenventing her to find rest. It's also always very connected to what I guess are local legends, with a variety of curses and things you can't do when dealing with the deceased. Classic plot, but good film nonetheless. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWno4I62Bs8

Hmm, the link seems to be defunct, but I looked for the trailer myself now and it makes a good impression! No idea how to find the actual film, though.

Cabin in the Woods.
Much less a horror film as it is just a genuinely good movie with an interesting twist. My definition of "Alternative Horror".

Re: horror movie recommendations
I watched it the night before last - nice! I recommended it to a friend right away and he liked it too. It gets more and more twisted towards the end. I particularly liked the scenes in the photo studio and on the ladder.
