http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine

Pharmacology section of article/Physical mechanisms for more details but in short

The cocaine is an antagonist (= it binds the same receptors as) of dopamine ( Dopamine is closely associated with reward-seeking behaviors, such as approach, consumption, and addiction) and creates a distinct feel of pleasure ("high"), the main problem is the drug is metabolized very fast (similar to a natural evoked withdrawal) and leaving the user needing more to avoid the depression-like state that follows ("down"). That is how addiction works in this case. I guess that mental addiction had the meaning of control over it since there is no such thing as physical or mental addiction, addiction is not divided in categories like these.

Compared to the withdrawl symptoms of heroin its still (I think) more of a mental addiction, as in you want more cos you feel crap, not cos you feel crap and you are sweating , feeling sick, shaking etc etc..

I see what you mean but those are different symptoms of the same think as the drugs are affecting neurons with different functions. That's why the use of what is called "speedball" is so dangerus as cocaine initially covers the effects of heroin but is metabolized in very fast pace and then heroin that needs much more time to be metabolized takes over causing almost a cataclysmic chain reaction of events (heroin has almost opossite stimulating effects on organs) that usually end with heart attacks, mostly fatal.
