socialized health care is just something i dont support for the society i live in

actually probably the opposite id go in for everything i could think of just to get my dollar's worth.

i am curious as to what value a government places on a human life though. i mean even with socialized health care they wont let you be a vegetable for 50 years on tax payer dollars, right?

the big point im trying to make here is socialized health care opens up a box of worms for the US that i feel are better left unopened. even with how terrible the system is now.

Hmmm, not sure. If you were on life support after an accident that made you a mindless vegetable then after a certain amount of time life support would be switched off. I don't believe there is a time limit to state benefis paid to people who are disabled/in a vegetive state etc... so in that case those people would be indirectly 'paid for' by all tax-payers.

Heh EPA say the value of a human life is $6.9 US dollars, though they also say that it "isn't to be taken as the actual value", makes you wonder why they bothered saying anything at all really. It is an interesting question though, the value placed on a life, especially when there are places where it seems to be worth nothing at all.

any sort of redistributive taxation is wrong. sure, it is fucked up that people suffer, but in a market without government interference there would not be as much poverty as there is now. i agree that everyone should give to the poor, repay all debt, give generously, take care of the environment, take care of family and relatives, and be responsible, but it is wrong for anyone to steal money from anyone else to pay for anything, solely because that person thinks that they know how to better spend the money. most of the money stolen by the federal government to pay for bureaucracies like the DEA, the department of education, the IRS, the CIA, the department of homeland security, and the like is all LOST in the bureaucracy of organizing it. where does it go? who knows. socialism would work if men were perfect and government was free of profit motive, but that is, unfortunately, how the world is. i mean come on. federal tax revenue remains at a constant 19.5% of GDP, no matter what tax rates are.

Is it me or are you confusing socialism with communism? It's not 'enforced communal living' you know.

Hehe, good point. Actually it's what the conservative / libertarian right in central europe does - anything that sounds a bit leftist is labelled as "communist" heritage, in order to delegitimize it. However, I would argue that what was understood as communism during the second half of the 20th century would be much more close to "totalitarian big-government capitalism". Still I'm kinda hoping someone will do a re-reading of Marx's capital in the vein of Quentin Skinner's re-reading of Machiavelli - showing that its reading in its historical context may bring completely different conclusions as are the conventional understandings in present are.

This thread died, Obama won, and I am worried.

Its amazing how fast he seems to be going back on his promises and he isn't even in office yet.

And for the record I voted for Ron Paul. As for the previous debate, most everyone from every single party is a horrible choice for a politician. Going back to the values that the United States was founded on seems to me the best choice, though I guess that will never happen.

all i am saying is that taking a mentality that says "it doesn't matter if you vote for a third party, they won't win no matter what" will never get a third party elected! also, voting on principle means sticking to your guns, and only pussies don't stick to their guns.
