Post ~~Manga~~

Well.. Are there any manga fans in this forum?

..For those who aren't familiar with the term "manga" :
Manga are the comics that are originally published in Japan. They are -largely- black&white and are read in a right-to-left fashion.. like this:

My favorite manga are "Gantz" and "Berserk". They both are dark and "doomy" -with lots of drama and gore-. I'd recommend them to anyone.. even to those who aren't fond of graphic novels. For me, reading them was a once-in-a-lifetime experience..(that I want to share with you guys :foryou:, lol). You can start reading them/checking them out here:
Gantz: http://manga.animea.net/gantz-chapter-1-page-7.html
Berserk: http://manga.animea.net/berserk-chapter-1-page-8.html

Warning: It may take a while to get to the point since both the aforementioned manga are huge (EPIC!!).. Also, they're still ongoing... (Berserk is 20 years old! :D)

I like Berserk a lot. :) Gantz is okay, but Berserk is damned good. And yeah, its as doomy as manga tends to get, less someone has some better examples. :p

The doomed forum has a manga reader (other than me)!!! That's great :D ..
I think that I like Gantz a little more than Berserk for the sci-fi theme and because at times it shows how f*cked up our society really is. Nevertheless, Berserk is a masterpiece as well.. =)

Mm.. It seems that some pages on http://manga.animea.net/ (for Gantz) don't exist.. So here's a more competent site:
http://www.mangavolume.com/index.php?se ... &page_nr=7

Anyway.. :P I was wondering if anyone has ever read a manga at least as dark and morbid as Berserk/Gantz.. =) because I've yet to find one.

I am sure there is another manga reader besides me here. :D Though the excessive sexual content in gantz ruined the atmosphere for me somewhat. When I was really just getting into this stuff I ran into the Berserk anime which led to the manga (Much better), so I am a bit partial. :p

As for other dark and morbid stuff, probably no English scans of the manga still, but Shadow Star Narataru probably has some parts like that.

Edit: There are translations, but it was never finished it seems.

I had a quick look at both and decided to read Gantz first as i prefer scifi over fantasy settings in general.
Gantz was pretty good, i like the weird stuff. Quite addictive, i read the entire thing that's available so far in a few weeks time.

Berserk seems deeper than Gantz, the storyline is more detailed and has a more convincing background. Occasionally Gantz feels it's doing weird stuff for the sake of being weird, but even the most unreal elements in Berserk fit nicely in the story and the background.

I really like both tho. Very enjoyable stuff. Haven't really read much other manga, tho i like more serious scifi comics in general. Stuff like Metabarons etc, but not the typical superhero comics as those get repetitive and shallow real quick.

Took a bit to get used to reading from right to left, but as i read some other comics it took a bit to get used to reading in the normal fashion again hehe.

I like some manga, not really a fan but sometimes it's quite entertaining.
I've been following Vinland Saga for some time, started reading Gunslinger Girl and Gantz but for some reason I lost interest in them. Now I'm trying Death Note.

I'm more into anime series than manga's. I once did buy Love Hina and the beginning of Gantz.
I quit reading Gantz after 6 manga's. Love Hina is indeed a bit cheesy perhaps, but I liked it.

Just started reading Vinland Sage. It's good stuff - very well drawn and the characters are great.

The same author also did 'Planetes', which is hard scifi. Both manga and anime. Haven't read it, but the combination of hard scifi and this drawing style might be a treat.

Also worth checking imo out is Battle Angel Alita. Cyborgs n stuff.

I also started Vinland Saga, only read the first chapter so far, but it was compelling. Planetes I have heard is mostly slice-of-life despite the setting, though I have also heard good things and Battle Angel (aka Gunnm) was quite fun, though its much less thought evoking as something like Berserk. More comparable to Gantz which I liked far less. Though the old school feel it has is rather different, that would be closer to perhaps Akira and Ghost In The Shell (The original).

Lone Wolf and Cub
Akira (the anime is fantastic but the graphic novel is much better)
Claymore (the series is OK but again the the printed series is better, only if the writer wasn't so slow)

Lots of manga readers here. Nice! I'll start checking out the manga you people recommend. -Those that I haven't already read-

I've recently started reading Shadow star Narataru. It's a good manga. I've found the complete manga translated here:

http://unixmanga.com/onlinereading/Naru ... _Star.html

I'd be happy If there was more gore in it though..

Also, I recommend Elfen lied (manga). It's dark and gory and it has a nice plot. You can start reading it here:

Note: There's some sexual content in it which Orbea Variegata may not like.

Dragon Head, combining horror and survival genres to an gripping result. Perhaps not the best out there, but it was thoroughly enjoyable and bleak while reading it. Monster and 20th Century Boys are two more good ones, both by the same author, Naoki Urasawa, and are quite hard to go into details about without spoiling or ranting incoherently on about. :lookaround:

One more, not really the best out there, but if you are into strange, gory, and creepy short reads. Tomie, the simple premise being about some girl that seems to make all the men go crazy over her both intentionally and unintentionally which leads them to kill her, then dismember her. Though, she will only come back to life again and again... The first chapter is easily the worst btw, the plots picking up later on.

I've seemed to have taken quite a liking to Monster. Definitely didn't finish the manga series as it's one of the longer ones, but do intend to watch the anime one day to get all caught up and whatnot.
