It could, it actually depends on what religion and what kind of music, generally i care more about the music and the atmosphere that it creates than the lyrics but bad lyrics can ruin a good song.

Religion and music both deal with "life". Music is a form of expression, religion a foundation, combining the two those makes perfect sense to me.

I watched a documentary called "Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music" or something like that and I must say that some times music and religion should go different ways. Exceptions are Trouble and especially Veni Domine (from doom at least)

A quick question for all of you guys - one thing is the mix of music and religion, but what is non-religion like (according to you)?
I'm in particular thinking Nietzsche with his remark that while God is dead, we are still faced with his shadow.

I got a question.

Let's say there is a muslim doom band, and we all know Islam and Christianity share "some" core values. Could a muslim doom band be part of CDA?

I think this question is moot at this point in time because, 1. the CDA is all but gone, and 2. I no longer have a desire to collect/categorize music in that fashion or continue the CDA for any reason. In short, I have moved on.

But I will attempt to answer your question using the mindset I had 5 years ago when I created the CDA.

I would say that if a Muslim Doom band existed that had a message that was general enough and not contrary to the message of the bands on CDA (or could be interpreted as such), I would not have had a problem including them.

However, as I said before, I am no longer interested in drawing such distinctions in music, for better or worse, so this whole subject and all of the furor it caused here and over at Hellride is no longer an issue...in my eyes anyway.

from what I understand music originally in tribal settings was only used for ritual and never as a form of entertainment.

Pro religious and anti-religious views all have their place in music. It's really a question of the quality of how your views are written and expressed. The listener ultimately decides whether or not it works for them.

To the title of the thread: never heard of Gregorian singing? Hildegard von Bingen?

Without religion I highly doubt music would have developed the way it did throughout history, so for me the question is fundamentally preposterous.
