An exceptionally-written review, though I can't say I've ever thought of Thorns of the Carrion as a gothic band. :D

A decent band that was connected to TotC was ...and Here I Lie, a melo-doom/death band that wound up disbanding after releasing one album in complete obscurity. I bought their only full album, Regrets, off of their songwriter Chris Dalcin. He told me about touring with Thorns of the Carrion and Rain Fell Within, and seemed to be pleasantly surprised that I even knew of the bands in the first place. It'd be nice if someday, and Here I Lie were to get a revisiting compilation like this and more people will learn about them.

I do hear a strong gothic touch in TOTC; the band has also rightfully been mentioned in the "horror gothic doom" thread on this forum...

well, The Scarlet Tapestry, to me is a gothic doom masterpiece... you just have to look at artwork... :)

Ah yes, because the artwork is what defines the music. :p I retract my statement to an extent after going back to a few tracks on The Scarlet Tapestry. There is some Medieval gothic flair in there (particularly in the clean vocals), but for the most part, I'd just say it's majestic sounding death/doom metal, like Morgion or early-Evoken. :D Anyhow, my most preferred release from the group would actually be The Gardens of Dead Winter. Very haunting, raw, and utterly creepy sounding stuff. Kind of like America's answer to Stream from the Heavens. If the editing of the album were less choppy and the sound were just a tad more polished, I feel it had the potential to be a classic all on its own.

Ah but the band was the first one ever to label themselves Gothic Doom (as seen on their flyers in the '90's), so who am I to disagree ? :D
But yeah, they're Gothic most in the sense of gothic litterature (their lyrics were among the best written of that time) than Gothic Rock. Apart My dying Bride, I've rarely read so beautifully written Doom lyrics.

Great review. Scarlet tapestry is a masterpiece. A perfect balance between doom and goth.
