I've just bough a copy of that split on basis of this review.

That's the spirit keeping the scene - and the site - alive! :;):

in fact, I messed it all up! :D I ordered the split Aphonic Threnody /Frowning instead of that with Ennui. It's a mistake, but that "other" split is good too!

From the same label, I was quite thrilled by another split they released: Dreams after Death and Nagaarum. It's more on the ambient side of funeral doom.

I listened to Aphonic Threnody's half of the split with Frowning some time ago (the other half wasn't even included in the promo download) and, upon first impression, liked it better than their standalone release. I might consider purchasing it in the long run... As for the Dreams After Death / Nagaarum split: how does it compare to Dreams After Death's albums? I quite like that project, but have never heard of the other one.

I'd say it's better. It's above all a very cohesive split; it's some solid, ambient doom with a "cosmic" aura. Really deep and gripping overall. The other band, Nagaarum is excellent, you'd think to hear Kostas from Pantheist singing on the last part, but since he's not credited... it's the guy of Nagaarum. You know: that frail liturgical clean voice... Both bands are one-man projects. Really, it's one of the best surprises of the year.

Thanks, sounds promising indeed! The guy behind Dreams After Death is really cool, too: he insisted on sending me a physical CD to thank me for my review. His music surely has an identity of its own.

it's pretty good, in fact... but I don't quite understand why a Nagaarum's track is called "Dave", though... :D

Haha, I just looked at that release on Discogs and realised that the tracks simply have been tagged incorrectly in the digital promo and I've downloaded the full split after all, so half of what I was listening to was actually by Frowning. I didn't notice much of a difference, apart from the cello... :D Anyway, today I re-listened to three of the four tracks (still assuming they were all by A.T.) and was really grabbed by them - this really captures the essence of what I love about Extreme Doom. Where did you order those CDs, bapho? Now's a good time for me to order some stuff since I recently received a massive PayPal refund. I guess that I'll have to buy the other two splits, too: listening to the Dreams After Death / Nagaarum split right now, and the first track is really promising. I agree, it's better than anything he has done so far. Looks like 2014 is going to be a solid year in Doom after all. :thumbs-up:
