I'm not a fan of this style, so I'm unfamiliar with what is expected out of it, but it seems weird that the reviewer implies that mournful traditional doom would be bad per se and that this style always requires "punch and metallic bite" in order to be good. Personally I'd pick this one over the new punky Count Raven offering=)

As for the album - it does not sound too bad, rather on the contrary=)

It's a solid album, more despondent than most so-called epic doom albums, that is true, but I guess it's a matter of taste. Their epicness, style-wise, translates rather well into the dreary lyricism they quite conscienciously cultivate; I'd even say there're not many like them conveying this kind of dusty feel, sullen and weary - and the tone can't be doomier imo! (7 would be a reasonable rating).

Yeah, and about the new Count Raven the review mentions, I didn't see where any samples could be listened to....

Mammons War is not a new album, it's been released 10 years ago! It's a rerelease, for sure. Technically, it's their latest indeed, but I know CR were about to release something reallly new, I heard they've composed some new songs, but I don't know when this album is scheduled.

Ah yes, I'm mistaken then... I was thinking about the new Saint Vitus album we were discussing some time ago that has a very punkish feeling=)

I rather took that to be a reference that if you want to follow the Candlemass route, you should be willing to include their gut-punch heaviness and aggression, rather than any condemnation of bands deciding to take a more wearily cynical and downbeat Warning -esque approach. But I am pretty much onboard with the idea that they're quite different beasts, and Dawn Of Winter don't draw out that distinction with what they do.
