That second track is nice. I have to say this is the first release of theirs I really like start to finish. The ep was good but this is really hitting the mark...

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
I have listened to this only a couple of times, and I think it needs more, but so far I like it a lot. The clean vocals work very well, the grunts are less blackish than before, and the guitars are quite nice.
Much better then the previous self-titled EP from 2016, which was a huge disappointment for me (as opposed to the Deathscape EP from which I have fond memories=)

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
It's hard to follow, they don't offer many grips... There's that awkward, quite convoluted, rugged flow that prevents me to get into it completely. I guess it might be on purpose though, but it's fustrating.

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
I'm a bit surprised, given your very complimentary review of 'Marrow Of Dreams'. I see this as a better-composed, more-polished take on that blueprint, though it doesn't have the same raw and sharp sound. Genuinely curious - do you think that's not actually the case, or that it is what they've done, but lost something along the way by smoothing up their sound?

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
I haven't listened to Marrow of Dreams for quite a long time. Maybe it's me who isn't concentrated enough and can't focus right? I've been listening to lots of easier stuff lately and this albums demands more attention. I'll listen to both of them in a row today. edit: I could rewrite one single sentence of that review of mine. After mentioning the "fascinating songwriting", the "progressive templates" and the "ever-changing painting", I wouldn't conclude with "and still managing to give it a natural flow". The flow isn't "natural" all along, certainly not smooth and fluid at any rate. It's grating, full of twists and turns that you don't see coming, but I am unable to say this is intentional or not. As a result, yes, it has a fascinating, engaging quality, but in retrospect, I see its lack of cohesiveness as a flaw, a fustrating maze where you bang into every wall. You know, the wall are covered with beautiful paintings, but you don't find the fucking way! That being said, when they released Marrow of Dreams, they did improve a lot over their debut, which I really can't listen to. I'll check out the new one once again, maybe they polished the sound a bit indeed, but the songwriting appeared as perturbating upon first approach....But now that I have Marrow of Dreams in the ears, maybe I'll change my mind!

Cool, I think that's a pretty much fair enough summation. I just kinda like that 'blind alley and find your own way through the maze' approach

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
It's not very dissimilar from Marrow of Dreams... just a bit softer in places... I can't listen to Deasthinastion and Deathscape.... the new album is much more listenable, although still too weird for me...

I'd say the joints are a better oiled, it's better structured with a better sense of the whole. Still, not an easy album!

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
Just spinning this for the first time. Turned up the other day with a handful of other new AD stuff. Really liking it so far... but then the more difficult it is the better for me

What else in your AD parcel? Anything you'd recommend?

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
The latest AD releases are this, the new Nagaarum, the new Pando, and The Pernicious Enigma CD version (which isn't out yet). http://www.doom-metal.com/news.php?entry=2147Not so much Doom in there, but the Pando album's an interesting mix of experimental noise/dark ambient and darkwave, and the Nagaarum's the doomiest he's been for a while, but still pretty heavy on the Black Metal. Both worth a listen, imo.

I can highly recommend the Pando.

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
Yes I have the Nagaarum and Pando records, not listened to either yet though.
Fingers crossed the TPE cds get printed in time, I'm down visiting Greg and maybe Stu that weekend and I can't wait any longer. Of course I've had the remixed album on CD(r) since before the vinyl came out, but since they've given it the nice packaging treatment that the demo got, I am excited.

Let me know when you visit Stu, because I live 15 minutes away... we could meet, if I'm not too busy with work!

I didn't know that! I've never been to Stu's actually, he just comes up to Greg's sometimes when I go there.

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
he still lives near Pershore, which is 15 minutes way from me... if I'm not mistaken, Esoteric used to meet or some of them lived in Church Street, in Pershore... can't remember exactly...

Re: Woebegone Obscured - "The Forestroamer"
I've now listened to the Pando record, and I recommend it to the right audience, which is anybody posting in this thread, pretty much.
