It's a pity they decided to record it this way - when you understand what's going on and you can hear anything besides the drums it's actually quite enjoyable. But most of the time it's a complete mess. A non-deserving-6.5-rating mess=)))

edit: just listened to the previous demo - completely different stuff, nice and enjoyable music, i do not know what they were thinking with this über-(stupid-)necro-sound...

I was expecting something, erm, really horrible, but I quite enjoyed it. I must admit I only listened to the first half of each track, but I din't hear all this "mess"... maybe I'm going deaf.

Sadly, haven't had any reply as yet, but I did mail them when I did the review and ask about that. The first demo is a lot better. This one - I think they still have good ideas, executed well (though it is hard to tell in places!) but recorded badly.

OK, so I did get a reply from the band. Pretty cool conversation, in fact.

The earlier demo was actually recorded some time ago, but is missing some of the instrumental parts which the sound engineer failed to capture, so they held back from releasing it until last year.

Since that was recorded they've had problems with getting a stable line-up, so this EP is actually also a demo, capturing the real 2017 state of the band, with plans to rework and refine the tracks for a future album version.

Hello! It's Lejonis, vocalist and guitarist of IDF.
First of all, thank you very much for your feedback and review - it was very important for us and made us take our music seriously and in a new way. Perhaps with our releases could cause confusion, because in one year there were two releases with different material. Some of it was already very old.
We've been really busy working on a full-length album lately. It will be very different from what you could hear on the old records. As part of this work, we have released a single that aims to demonstrate the current state in music. However, at the same time we realized that the new material is so far from the past that we came to the conclusion that the project in the old form rather should be closed. So at the moment our group is disbanded. In December we released a single that will be the last record of IDF. The new album will have a new band name (but the old line-up) and we plan to finish recording by the end of this year. It will include 4 or 5 tracks lasting 15 to 60 minutes and will be much more progressive than past recordings. At the moment we have clearly realized the vector of development - to a greater extent we are attracted to the old school doom death, avant-garde black metal and experimental guitar music.
If anyone has an interest - you can read the latest single, it is available at this link: https://idfband.bandcamp.com/album/--2

Thanks for the update, Lejonis. I took that onboard and rewrote the last paragraph of the review for 'Призраки над океаном тумана', which is finally online at http://www.doom-metal.com/reviews.php?album=3431.
