Thanks for the interview! Will never forget driving both Norrmans almost to death in my old Ford Escort when October Tide was around. I bet they won't either haha.

PS. yeah and I believe it's "Norrman", not "Normann". Both in the interview and Facebook.

Heh, that sounds like a good story, if you want to share some more detail...
PS: Yeah, it is - that was corrected within minutes. You did well to pick up the unfortunate but temporary misspelling!

Post Re: Interview with October Tide

We had one of the Doom Over Kiev events going on and I was asked to help with bands transportation as I have a vehicle with large carrying capacity. I agreed and it appeared to be I'd be helping with transferring October Tide to the venue (the hotel room was located near as well). The band was successfully picked at the airport and I ended up with most of their instruments packed in my car with both Norrmans as passengers. The weather outside was quite fitting (it was raining) and I ended with having a very poor back visibility (all the guitar cases and other stuff literally blocked any rear view).

I rarely go to the centre of the city with my car and I had a very basic understanding of how to get there, as previously I've done the same thing for Pantheist once only (and it went much better haha). I had my smartphone with the GPS map application just in case and my initial plan was to follow other cars which carried the rest of the band.

However as you can assume it all went a bit other way. With all the rain and other distractions I had to deal with I've missed the right turn and had to go back as this was a one way road and I wouldn't want to go forward just to find the proper way. Mattias was helping me out from the passenger seat so I wouldn't hit anything from that side of the car while Fredrik was signing some American gospel type of song.

We've got back to the right road but by that time all other cars I was hoping to follow were gone. So naturally I've launched my smartphone app and was hoping for the best. The problem was that due to rain the signal was shitty and this led into a few more wrong turning decisions. At some point I was so hopeless I though I have to stop and seek for a cab for the guys as everyone else got to the place already (there was no super rush but still I felt guilty). However I was able to pull my shit together and get them in one piece to the destination point.

The cool thing about it is that I really doubt any other car that was transferring other band members made such a great city tour for them haha. Not sure Fredrik and Mattias were really up to that tour but they were quite supportive and patient (or just didn't want to annoy me as I was the guy behind the wheel). We had a few laughs about the whole process after everyone gathered in the pub, although I was stressed out as shit.

They did a great show though. And all I know I was never asked to help with transferring the bands again :D.

good anecdote! I've learned that GPS apps are unable to seriously help you if you haven't beforehand a slight knowledge of the place or some good inborn spatial orientation abilities.

Google Maps works fine for me... :) it also gives you alternative routes in case of heavy traffic. Managed not to miss my flight once when there was an accident just before Stansted Airport on the M11...

Don't suppose you were driving Esoteric around for 2011's Doom Over Kiev? I have met you if so!

Nice interview

Nice story too, Bewitched. I reckon it was all a bit stressful, but I guess at least you had plenty of time to take pictures with the guys and maybe autographs (if you're into that kind of stuff) :-)
Cheers from Lviv, Ukraine :-)

I usually don't like to bother people with stuff like that. However we surely had some fun time after the driving haha. Cheers man!

Cool story, bro :D takes me back to driving Esoteric around loads of strange cities!
My recommendation - buy a dedicated satnav. I absolutely swear by my Garmin Nuvo 2599, it's got me pretty much to the exact spot everywhere I've needed to be across Europe for the past few years, be it the centre of Berlin or out in the middle of Estonian nowhere. Phones, and crappy map apps, meh. Waterproof case for mounting on-bike, suction cup for van dashboard, and you're sorted !

My Tomtom is really trustworthy, as well as my little Garmin Etrex20. Never got in any trouble with those.

(Among other things, that's what restrains me from buying a new car right now, since most recent models have an integrated GPS system, and I don't know how reliable it can be - yes, a bourgeois concern, I confess :D)

I had a separate GPS device for my car, however it got damaged and is not usable anymore. Anyway I usually use the car to go to countryside and I know this road too well to use any maps.

one question about the interview for a change:

Aleks keeps coming in the beginning of the interview with questions alluding to issues with Renkse's voice, but he never precises which kind... And Norrman doesn't develop either....

Apparently, he had some kind of throat trouble in the late '90s that stopped him doing growls altogether. That was why Mikael Akerfeldt did most of the vocals on Brave Murder Day, and Katatonia shifted to using cleans after that. I think that's fairly well-known, so perhaps that's why it wasn't really commented on in the interview.
Renkse covers it briefly himself here http://www.metalblast.net/interviews/katatonia-jonas-renkse-interview/.

Good interview. The first 3 albums are great with the first two being amazing. Tunnel was very bland and I haven't heard Waltz yet

I suggest an asterisk in the future dictionary is used to explain this more clearly...

edit: Tunel of No light is my favourite. I got rid of all the others! :D I don't think much of that band to be honest.
