Yes, it's me, I just put too much thought into this album and decided it shouldn't go to waste=)))

Hey, don't leave us like that now that you're all het up! Time for Wastes, Funeral Mourning, Chelsea Wolfe, Fuocco Fatuo and all the rest to make it to the front page!

I've just read the whole review. :D

It's a very meticoulous dissection taht your obvious disappointment explains; Funnily, I my self love pretty much exclusively Insomnia of which you seem to think so little! I have some problems with those very versatile vocals used plentifully on the first releases that you point out as one feature you'd wish he'd have kept, but I don't: I'm happy he got more mature and got rid of those piercing moaning. A thing I don't like in Ataraxie/Funeralium either.
Mourning Dawn on the other hand have achieved a remarkable balance, That is the only band of this "suicidal vein" that I really care for.

Back then, when Insominia was released I had already worshiped the previous albums for quite some time, so the change was completely unacceptable for me=) Listening to it now, without any expectations - it has some very nice moments (middle part of 3rd track, the entire 4th track) but the majority is pedestrian. It's not just the toning down of the vocals' edge, for me it sounds artificial. I really cannot know how I'd view this album if it were released by a different band.

I perfectly agree that Mourning Dawn hit the perfect balance, although I also enjoy the extreme wailings of Marquis. But I'd definitely place his vocals in the same category as Laurent's just on the extreme side. Maybe the problem is that I put Marco's vocals in a one of a kind category=)

As for the "suicidal vein" - when done right I think you can hardly find more affecting type of doom. (mind you, I loathe dsbm=)

I find the whiny/tortured voice impossible to listen to... music is ok, but über-tortured doom is not my cup of tea. I find it boring and sterile... :O
