Post Comatose Vigil

A news coming out of the blue, rather exciting, although their latest album wasn't very good - and although I am not more convinced by Mesmur.. But the name belongs to a time I'm fond of, when Funeral Doom was still a vast promising field to plough. Comatose Vigil's demo was one of those visionary underground gems and I'm happy they didn't give up!

From their FB page - https://www.facebook.com/ComatoseVigilAK/:

Quote:
Comatose Vigil has been inactive since 2016.

A.K. iEzor has decided to revive the band under the moniker "Comatose Vigil A.K." and he is joined by David Unsaved of Ennui and John Devos of Mesmur.

Non Serviam Records will release the anticipated third full length "Evangelium Nihil" on CD.
It will be the first release of the band since 2011.

Well, this is great news indeed. I like the idea of the trio musicians and I'm happy that the guitars go to the Ennui guy. December 14 is not too far away, we'll see what comes up=)

And you are right, early 00s was a very exciting time for funeral doom.

Btw, which demo are you referring to? I've only listened from Not a Gleam of Hope onwards, anything worthwhile before that?

Yes, this demo; they re-released it later on cd, but it was first a bunch of mp3 files, heralded as a demo, and I remember very well the time it came out, it sounded like a record out of a pitch black dungeon, it released really an unheard, striking feel of brooding menace and lurking insanity. The sound was super raw and as been polished a lot when Marche Funebre came in and supported the band.

That sounds quite cool, I'll try to dig up the demo then, I'll be very curious to hear a rawer version of Not a Gleam of Hope=)

I'd like to help you, but I've had these files on an older laptop and I lost them; I still have that sound in the ears though.

I doubt it will be too difficult tracking these down. Russians are very active in P2P file sharing, so somebody is bound to have these old demos=)

Have the tracks been changed at all for the CD version (Not a Gleam of Hope)?

I'm very curious to hear the two rehearsal demos from 2003. I can find info about them, including tracklisting, but the Demo 2004 is only mentioned on this site, so I have no idea what's the deal with that one.

This won't be a blind purchase for me, I'll wait until they release the tracks for streaming first=)

Btw I listened to both Rehearsal demos and they are quite different from one another.

I think that the second one already gives the leading role to the majestic keyboards (which is one of the reasons that Not a Gleam of Hope did not age too well with me, I'd rather have more guitars nowadays), but the vocals are very good and raw.

The first one on the other hand has sparse keys, but unfortunately the vocals are too badly recorded, at times barely there, otherwise this would have been fantastic=)

One song is streaming, it's a so-called radio-edit.. don't know why they bothered to edit it....

It's obviously just a sample of a longer song. Its been edited. It's length is very short for the genre! :D

The length does not worry me, but the complete and utter lack of any progression does=(

Hopefully the full album will reveal something different.
