Post Evoken - Hypnagogia

I decided to make a thread for this album, just to keep the comments in one place.

So, as baphomet already posted we have the first song from the new album. As always with Evoken, it does not grab me upon the first couple of listens at all, but I think I like the change in sound, it's quite dynamic for them (which should be a bad thing if you liked the previous albums, but I didn't=).

the problem I have with this one song is that it goes in all directions; you got it all in one package, death doom, post-metal, melodic doom and a bit of funeral, it sounds a bit artificial.

To me, it's much better than the previous stuff, which I always found terminally boring... :)

A new song is out:

It sounds even more weird (for Evoken) than the first one. I was quite surprised by the upbeat clean vocals=)))

odd song. It ends very abruptly, and the clean choir thing is er... a bit embarassing.

I have a awkward feeling about this. Hopefully the album as whole will be good.

This one review is rather funny in the way it stubbornly sticks to the idea this is Funeral doom when every paragraph adds another reason why it is not:

In Facebook, Evoken account replied to a comment about the 2nd song preview:
"Fear not. Once the entire album is heard, misery & darkness will fall upon all. Serenity always obscures the horror beneath."

Keeping my hopes.

To be fair to Evoken, IMO the 1st song they revealed was OK, but the second Ceremony of Bleeding was meh specially with that vocal part.

Both songs are good but too fast. Thankfully I don't think they're going to pull an Ahab on us. 'Boats of the Glen Carrig' sucks.

I like it far better than the dull The Divinity of Oceans, which completely misses its target, emotionally, imo. I wrote a review of it, and I didn't change my mind a bit since then.

The Divinity of Oceans is their best album with the Giant close behind. I enjoy their debut but to me they really became a force of nature of their sophomore album.
