Post Doom Metal Lexicanum

Some of you may already be aware that Comrade Aleks, our prolific guest interviewer, has been working on an encyclopaedia of Trad-based bands. Obviously, it's not every such band - that would be a) impossible with only one lifetime to spend on the project and b) impossible to keep up with the updates that would be needed over the lifetime of the project, even with the typical speed of Doom releases... - but it is a thorough and detailed exploration of a many and varied cross-section of the genre, based on firsthand interviews with each of the bands concerned.

Well, it's been a while coming, and an awful lot of man-hours along the way - but the Doom Metal Lexicanum is not only finally complete, but available for pre-order as of now. I can commend it to you: I've been editing and proofing it since Aleks started the project back in December 2015, and I have a painfully clear idea of exactly how much work and detail has gone into it. So has my invaluable co-editor Tana, of Eternal Elysium fame, who came onboard to keep us on-track when the pace began to flag. The book itself has been finalised by Dayal Patterson, himself a veteran extreme metal writer, for publication through his Cult Never Dies house.

Get yourself, or a loved one, some serious Doom for Christmas (at £5 off, if you pre-order it now):

Could we have one of two pages to read, to test the water before any more decisive commitment?

Anyway, huge accomplishment this is, and quite a satisfaction to be able to hold the real stuff in your hands!

Post Re: Doom Metal Lexicanum

I'm not really interested in Trad doom, but I plan to buy this book.

My only problem is that I cannot form a clear idea of what exactly the book is. Basically this sentence bugs me:

"This book guides the reader through each band's discography, frequently including interviews with the artists involved."

Does this mean that it's mainly an encyclopedia with some interviews, or that it's a history type book that also includes encyclopedic details like discographies, etc?

Since I'm not really interested in trad doom, I won't be buying it, but - yes - it would be nice to have some samples...

I saw a full list of bands earlier, there were a few none trad ones. Only glanced at it, will try and find it again.

Also, I'm in it, so there's that :;):

EDIT: Well, full band list is in the link, so you probably saw it. And yeah, there's a lot of Trad! And Stoner. But there are a few of interest.

It's mainly an alphabetical collection of band biographies that include information from both interviews and reviews of their back catalogue, with a certain amount of encyclopaedic detail per band entry.

Yeah, I guess by Trad-based in my OP, I mean not-really-any-extreme-genres. '70s Psych/Stoner influences, some of the Sludge/Stoner crossover, and the Italian dark sound are all part of the picture, not just out-and-out Trad/Epic.

I'm told this is in the immediate pipeline, so I can hopefully give a bit of a preview in the very near future. At this stage, it's really down to agreement between publisher and author, my couple of years of editing work keep me on the distro list, but not on the publicity decision-making one. Which is fair enough and quite understandable, but it does put me in the awkward position of having insider knowledge and detailed previews without any mandate to share those more widely as yet!
But, yeah, it's been a lot of work, and I'm real proud to see it make it all the way to physical publication. Full credit to Aleks for doing all the heaviest lifting (and masses of it), but there's a lot of myself and Tana gone into it too. I really am looking forward to seeing the final, 'real' result...

Does this mean that we'll be able to order it from you directly, as I'd rather prefer that=)))

Not a commercially-available one, as far as we know. It wasn't really intended to be anything other than a physical release.

No, it just means I get the news and updates automatically. If I wanted to resell copies, I'd have to buy them up front. I'd consider that if there was enough interest, but I doubt we'd be able to offer any improvement on speed, cost or reliability over ordering direct from Cult Never Dies (who are also UK-based).

This is amazing. Thanks for putting this together. And congratulations on all of your efforts--this is a huge accomplishment. I can tell you put a lot of work into this.

Two years' hard work, mate! We (particularly Aleks) weren't dicking about or goofing off: as Deadpool likes to say 'Maximum Effort!'. It's a full 300 A4 pages, entirely suitable for occupying your favourite coffee table :D

I hope perhaps we will...but you may need to wait awhile!

It has, we've been sharing news at it comes. Doesn't stay at the top of the timeline for long, though - I hope to get a chance to pin it there for a while after our Norilsk exclusive expires, and before the next release exclusive comes up...

There was a screenshot of the Candlemass page, which due to alphabetical ordering was also the Camel of Doom page, so I've had a chance to read our entry. It serves as a thorough and (as far as these things go) factually accurate rundown of the whole 15 year span of the band. If the writing in the rest of the book is at an equal standard, it should be an essential buy for fans of the genre!

That's as good a recommendation as I need. Glad I ordered one.
