those bands have polarized opinion on these boards before, so perhaps we could have a discussion again...

I was not really impressed by the new Katatonia. 3-4 listenable songs, best of which probably this catchy ditty:

Alcest re-incorporated brutal vox again, after their most accessible release 2 years ago...

Ghost released a covers EP that also includes this unbearably catchy toon:

and finally Opeth are set to release another Camel tribute album next week:

what say you?

well, I don't mind the Katatonia album... true, it's a bit lightweight and inconsistent, but a few good songs in it... really like the Alcest song... :D and Opeth are, well, Opeth... mummified to the extreme, it sounds... ah, I nearly forgot Ghost... actually, I haven't... I hate them... :p

I really like the new Katatonia. Better than Dead End Kings.
Unexpected turn for Alcest to go back to their older style. Sounds great to me.
I don't mind Ghost but I don't find them interesting enough to follow and haven't bothered listening to Meliora.
And Opeth...Time to give up on them after Heritage and Pale Communion, and now this. The music is okay...but it's just lacking the metal riffs, which is my main appeal with them.

I haven't listened to anything from Katatonia since 'Night is the New Day'. It was a so so album at best. I really only like their stuff up to LFDGD.
I've always hated blopeth. I don't understand their popularity, especially after they stopped playing metal.
Ghost isn't a metal band. From what little I've heard they're just a throwaway retro rock group that magically came from nowhere to festival headliner. Funny how no one mentions that.
I've never listened to Alcest but my friends call them hipster and that's enough for me to stay away.

I wouldn't call them "metal", though... some kind of "post"... maybe post-shoegaze for Alcest... :p Opeth are post-Opeth...

Post Re: Latest Opeth, Katatonia, Alcest, Ghost, etc.

I found the last two Opeth albums less than interesting already, but the new one is downright boring. They've given up on the last bit of complexity and atmosphere and sound like just another run-of-the-mill Retro Rock band now. I totally dislike the retro production, too. I don't even mind them giving up the Metal elements, but unfortunately, they gave up the atmosphere and natural flow I've always loved them for at the same time.

The new Katatonia, on the other hand, was a very pleasant surprise and, in fact, one of 2016's album highlights for me. I agree with moc's statement above - while I found "Dead End Kings" disappointing for the most part, "The Fall of Hearts" really grabbed me. Not only did they become more complex, varied and progressive than ever before; at the same time, they brought back some of the bare, uncompromising emotion I missed on their previous two releases (also counting "Dethroned and Uncrowned" here, which was utterly unnecessary!). I also dig the stronger emphasis on acoustic sections. The only thing that never really sits too well with the rest of the arrangements is the percussion, best illustrated on the opening track which isn't the best choice by a long shot.

As for the other bands - never heard of Ghost, never cared about Alcest, so I have nothing to report.

I've lost interest in all three bands actually, a long time ago...

At the risk of a beating, can I just say that Ghosts' Opus Eponymous is fantastic. :(

I gave a listen to the new Alcest and, to my surprise, found it pretty good! In fact, I like it better than anything else I've heard from them.

The other way around; their latest is probably their dullest...

Well, to me it's the only album that doesn't sound completely dull. Still not a masterpiece, but quiet pleasant nonetheless.

Which of the many bands called Ghost are you talking about, anyway? The context in which they're mentioned makes me curious about them - any recommendations?
