Is Animals as Leaders an all instrumental band? I've waited till someone comes and yells in the mic, but it didn't happen, so I cut it off...

I quite like some of the Tesseract. A sort of Djent version of Dream Theatre... I'll definitely be listening to them more.
Animals As Leaders are clearly very good at what they do, but it's not really my thing. Probably won't stop me trying them again though. I often think I should listen to more instrumental stuff... :D

They are not bad... kind of approachable and safe progressive metal... I find them a bit too boring... at least Porcupine Tree in the In Absentia and Deadwing period were a tad more inventive...

Just mallcore. lol

Several replies about Tesseract and only one use of the D word*! Thank god. I like them a lot. They have their formula and they stick to it, but on the other hand having a million time signature changes in an otherwise catchy melodic metal song, without anybody noticing, is impressive. Whenever I attempt it it is just jarring.
I like Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson's subsequent stuff a lot. Seeing him on the mainstage this year too. But I'd LOVE his music with a different vocalist.

Animals As Leaders - I like to watch videos of them playing live. One of the best, and most unique guitarists out there. Playing fast is easy. Playing fast doing two handed tapping on all 8 strings whilst maintaining a bassline with your thumb is hard. But I can't sustain listening to them for more than about 15 minutes.

As a general guideline if you want to identify 'good' mainstream metal, look at the Hellfest main stage, and the Download main stage. The ones that are at Hellfest but not Download - those are the good ones.

*Djent - although, I believe the term comes from Meshuggahs guitarist doing onomatopoeia for their riffs, so if the genre is just bands that steal Meshuggah's riffing style, then they definitely qualify big time.

Do Orphaned Land qualify? I like them, at least their debut albums. I didn't listen to the other ones too much, just some samples now and then from YT, it doesn't seem to have evolved much... Mabool is a total masterpiece though!!!

Well they meet my criterea :;): - caught about 15 minutes of their set in 2016. I like some tracks for sure. The bombastic ones.

Interesting. Didn't know that, but makes sense. Meshuggah are great.

Yes, I can believe that. Download seems to try to 'cater for everyone' and spreads the quality very thinly over the two or three days. Last time I went for the day, purely to see Maiden. Luckily Motorhead and Mastodon were playing but there was literally nothing else worth seeing. (Imo, obviously). For us older gits, and frankly, the more discerning metal head, you've always been better served by the European festivals, either them or Bloodstock. In any case I went off Download once they moved the stage from where it used to be when it was Monsters of Rock. Just didn't have the same feel. #grumpygitsetinhisways :D

I will never understand why Rammstein is so successful outside of the German speaking countries.

Of course they know how to play, how to party and how to use images.

Probably it's their play with German clichés what people find amusing.

Also their German is simplistic enough that I can translate a lot of it with high school level grasp of the language. And just one of the best arena shows I ever saw. And they play TIGHT (although the music is simplistic, it is still impressive, and sounds goooood).

I probably wouldn't have quite such an enjoyment of them (I was a fan back in the day, but would have lost enthusiasm) if they wern't my wifes favourite band. So I have been exposed to them a lot, enough to get a good appreciation. She doesn't speak a word of German but likes his nice deep manly voice. Why she goes for me HAHAHA.

Post Re: Mainstream Metal

That's it, their German is simple enough, but the main thing is that they're absolute beasts on stage. Many bands that sound cool in studio albums sound like they're hungover on stage (maybe they actually are?) and that's underwhelming. However, Rammstein are better live, with the visual show they're putting.

Speaking of mainstream metal, would Sabaton count as such? I mean, they've got quite the following and you can find lots of videos using their music on youtube. Most of them are crap, but still it means they've got lots of people willing to use their music for their videos.

I'd call Sabaton mainstream. I've been told I'd like them too but I only listen to GOOD power metal bands. Typically old school bands or uniquely different bands and in that style there hasn't been much innovation.

High on Fire is another band I call mainstream. I cannot stand them. I don't care for any stoner rock however.
