Post Looking for super-dark, extreme Death Metal

I’ve never been that much of a Death Metal fan because most of it simply isn’t atmospheric enough for my taste, but there are exceptions, and I’m sure there must be way more bands than I’m aware of. Recently I’ve found myself craving for extreme Death Metal with a sinister, menacing, apocalyptic and/or doomy atmosphere. It can’t be grim and dark enough! I quite like Incantation, for instance, but they’re almost too soft… :D I’ve been particularly hooked on the following recently:

Since I’ve never explored the genre systematically, feel free to also suggest some ‘obvious’ names. Death Doom sections are a plus, but not a must. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You want sinister and menacing? Surely the most obvious (and first) of all. I miss this band, it's a real shame they don't exist any more.
Spoiler: show

More modern - by release date anyway!! Holy SHIT I forgot how great this EP is.
Spoiler: show

I reviewed this for DM.com a few years ago under the pretense of it being Doom. Judge for yourself. I liked them so much I stole their artist for my album. New full length coming soon!
Spoiler: show

I'll add more when I think of it, but this is also the Death Metal I like.

The new and wonderful Usurpress album is now streaming on Decibel Mag's website. Do yourselves all a big favour and listen to this goddamn monster of beauty.

If it's atmosphere you want then anything by Grave Miasma ought to suit.
Portal are interesting, as are their offshoot Impetuous Ritual. Both very extreme.
Imprecation and Necrowretch are excellent, particulalry Necrowretch.
I recently reviewed Krypts and Spectral Voice for the site. Both are pretty good, especially Spectral Voice who have bundles of atmos.
Cryptopsy's Blasphemy Made Flesh is a personal favorite as is Effigy of the Forgotten by Suffocation and Beneath the Folds of Flesh by Insision. All nice and brutal. The later might please if you like Hate Eternal.

And...just for the hell of it, try Soulside Journey by Darkthrone. Plenty of atmosphere there suprisingly enough. :D

Thanks for all the recommendation so far! I haven’t had the chance to check out the more recent ones (listening to Insision right now, though – nice!). Kris, your suggestions all sound great and it’s indeed the atmosphere I’m after, though they lack the extremity and aggression I’m after at the moment. Still, they’re releases I’ll surely return to! As for Morbid Angel, though, despite their status, I’ve never been able to get into their stuff for some reason. Perhaps I should check out some more albums. But where to start?

Bapho, I already know and enjoy Nile, and actually considered mentioning them as a reference. I opted against it because, as you say, they’re not all that dark. Excellent band, though! The Mithras track sounds very promising – will investigate further! I remember that there was something of a Bölzer hype around here some years ago, but now as then I’m having a hard time getting into them…

I remembered Cruciamentum, whom I’ve been meaning to check out for quite some time. Turns out they fit the bill pretty well:
Spoiler: show

In general, as mentioned above, I’m after stuff that’s both dark and extreme, with loads of lightning-fast blasting and suchlike (cf. Hate Eternal’s ‘I, Monarch’ album).

there's Disma in the same vein as Cruciamentum, although I find them quite generic and a bit artificial.

Funebrarum are good and full of fast blastings. (I think there's members of Evoken in it)

For even more brutal stuff, I'mnot your man! :D

I agree about Disma: at first I was really hooked, but after buying their album, it soon felt stale and, as you say, generic. Perhaps it's also a little too groovy and 'cool' for my taste. I listened to Funebrarum a while ago when I remembered Nick Orlando was in it, but they didn't really grab me. This might have been due to a passing mood, though, so I'll definitely reevaluate them.

I listened to some tracks today during grocery shopping (very fitting indeed!); they sound to me like a Death Metal version of Darkspace... Interesting when in the right mood!

Today I discovered Blood Incantation and boy, this stuff is bloody impressive! It might even be some of the finest Death Metal I've heard. I just hope the excitement will outlast the first impression, which it rarely does these days. Anyway, be sure to check out this incredible track:

It's playing in the background right now. Pretty wimpy, innit? I'm not saying it's bad, but it's probably in the wrong thread... :;):

wimpy? wimpy? Holy shit. Wait for the death metal parts. Such a dark and incredibly beautiful album.
Also, the latest Azarath 'In Extremis' shits all over the above mentioned recommendations. A beast, a fucking beast.

d.mimosa; I think Black/Death might be the style to explore. Abyssal for instance is pitch black:

Thanks, bapho! I don't actually hear that much Black Metal in either of the two, which is good: for some reason, I prefer to keep the two genres separate. Whatever you call them, though, both bands sound very promising! I particularly enjoyed the Abyssal album, which reminds me of Gorguts in the best way. Will investigate further! :thumbs-up:

I feel the swirling riffing, the unrelentless drumming and the overal very grim, malevolent vibe is very bM-ish. Maybe "blackened Death" would describe more accuratly the impression I get from this kind of music.
Abyssal manage to add some really venomous doom in the mix. It's an intersting project.

You're right, the Doom influences are an added bonus! Have you listened to Blood Incantation above? They're roughly similar, certainly less doomy, but no less impressive...

There's a member of this forum who is in Cruciamentum. Hopefully during one of his rare visits he will stop by and recommend some good stuff. I know this is totally his thing (well, obviously).

I know nothing of death metal, but this very fast japanese death/doom/industrial is quite brutal and sick:

True, this really is a fantastic album, although I wouldn't necessarily call it better than everything else. (I know, I'm slow.)

Thanks for the recommendation! Not really my cup of tea, though...

This is some seriously twisted shit, too; not sure if I even like it that much, but at least it was fascinating on some level:

Post Re: Looking for super-dark, extreme Death Metal

How did I miss this topic?

Seems all you need is so-called "new wave of old-school death metal" (at least that was the term used for a while).

We've already got Cruciamentum, Funebrarum, Mitochondrion, Grave Miasma and even Disma mentioned here, so what's left?
Dead Congregation, Cemetery Urn, Father Befouled, Gutwrench, Grave Upheaval, Ignivomous
Ritual Chamber, Chthe'ilist
Desolate Shrine, Lantern
God Disease, Gravecrusher, Excoriate, Decapitated Christ, Necros Christos, Kaamos...
Perhaps also Ævangelist (AKA Aevangelist)

And many more: https://www.last.fm/tag/new+wave+of+old ... al/artists

P.S. I'm not sure how much does it fit, but I absolutely adore that single album by Disciples of Mockery, "Prelude to Apocalypse".
