Post Gothic Metal Request

Greetings! It feels like I haven't been here in forever. I sadly haven't been spending much time with Doom over the last year, so my attendance kind of dwindled. Over the last couple months i've been spending a lot of time with more Gothic Metal oriented groups (groups that I have, as well, been listening to for years, but right now it's been on higher rotation than normal) and figured here might not be a bad place to ask for recommendations. I'm not crazy about female-fronted Gothic Metal groups, especially ones who use a more operatic tone. It's fine in small doses, but it's a sound i'm not keen on hearing on a regular basis. A lot of what I listen to related to the genre is below, so if you want you can base it off of that. Or just tell me what you love and i'll check it out. Thanks in advance!

Type O Negative - 'Bloody Kisses' / 'October Rust' / 'World Coming Down' / 'Life is Killing Me'
Tiamat - 'Prey' / 'A Deeper Kind of Slumber'
Pist.On - 'Number One'
Lacrimas Profundere - 'Fall, I Will Follow' / 'Ave End' / 'Filthy Notes for Frozen Hearts'
Sentenced - 'Down' / 'Frozen' / 'Crimson' / 'The Cold White Light' / 'The Funeral Album'
Katatonia - 'Discouraged Ones' / 'Tonight's Decision' / 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' / 'Viva Emptiness' / 'Great Cold Distance'
A Pale Horse Named Death - 'And Hell Will Follow Me' / 'Lay My Soul To Waste'
To/Die/For - 'All Eternity' / 'Jaded'
Poisonblack - 'Escapexstacy'
HIM - 'Venus Doom'
Paradise Lost - 'Paradise Lost' / 'In Requiem'
Entwine - 'Time of Despair'

I share the same opinion on Gothic metal as you it seems. Good in small doses. Therefore I don't know a ton of bands, but I would like to put a word in for The Foreshadowing if you don't know them.

also Moonspell, I guess.

Maybe give a try to The Vision Bleak as well.

Then, you have that band combining old-school gothic with a very modern touch, Order of Isaz:

Well, being lazy, here's a quick dump of all the stuff I can think of in my collection that's got at least a decent helping of Gothic Metal , has primarily male vocals and isn't too annoying to inflict on people:
Before The Dawn
Beyond The Void
Dawn Of Dreams
Decoryah
Desire (Finland)
Diabolique
Dreadful Shadows
Ereley
Eternal Tears Of Sorrow
Evemaster
EverEve
Fragile Hollow
Inhuman
Lake Of Tears
Martyr Lucifer
Penumbra
Saviour Machine
Sculpture
Silentium
Sinamore
Sorrowful Angels
Umbra Et Imago
Voiceless Void
Winds Of Sirius
And I'd also add Lacrimosa, despite the occasional female leads.

Thank you for the EverEve recommendation. I'm definitely enjoying this. Will be working on getting through the rest!

Make sure to check out EverEve's "Seasons" album. It's probably their best and one of the better ones out there. Also, I second Penumbra ("The Last Bewitchment" is an amazing recording!) and early Moonspell. You can't go wrong with their timeless recording "Irreligious". Most of the genre is utter shit, a fact that makes those rare gems shine even brighter...

Going to assume many people haven't heard of these guys. Slovakian band who is basically a B- version of Type O Negative. The album art, the song titles, the music... talk about bringing your influences front and center. They're not terrible, though. They just make a lot of songs that sound like scrapped Type O tracks. This is Frown.

And this is their first album cover...

You might like (though not all of them are very 'Metal'):

The Loveless - Star Rover
Autumn Clan - Requiem to the Sun
Zeraphine - Traumaworld
Pale Forest - Exit Mould
Autumn - My New Time
Nemesea - The Quiet Resistance

The last three are female-fronted, but not in an operatic style, so maybe they're okay.

Post Re: Gothic Metal Request

This seems like the right thread for the following question: at an exhibition in Leipzig in connection with this year's WGT, they had a great playlist running, including a track by Trees of Eternity, Dark Lunacy, etc. They also played a really catchy Gothic/Symphonic Metal track very much in the vein of Evanescence, We Are the Fallen and the likes which, I suspect, is probably called "Buried Alive" (at least that was a recurring phrase in the chorus). Unfortunately, I don't know the band, and a quick search of "Buried Alive" plus some keywords on YouTube didn't take me anywhere, probably because there are thousands of tracks with that title out there. :;): Does anyone here have an idea which track it may have been? I've tried the few usual suspects I know of (Within Temptation, Xandria) without success, though YT may simply not have it.

Edit: and no, it's definitely not "Bury Me Alive" by We Are the Fallen, which I'm familiar with!

it could be Aeternitas (DE) or Eleanor (JAP), both of whom have songs with that title on their albums, which both came out last year. neither is on youtube, but I'm sure you'll find them somewhere :) if this was in WGT, it's probably the german band...

and, for future reference, get the shazam app if you have a smartphone :)

Post Re: Gothic Metal Request

Thanks for the suggestions! I checked out both tracks on Spotify, but it was neither of them, unfortunately. A few more details about the track I'm looking for: it has female vocals exclusively, it's in a 6/8 rhythm, there are sweeping strings in the chorus (I think), and I remember that its main line went "help me I'm buried alive". This doesn't necessarily mean that the track is called "Buried Alive", of course. In any case, I'm sure it must be fairly well-known - it sounded extremely professional and well-produced.

That app probably wouldn't be much use to me without mobile internet, would it?

Edit: Ha, found it, mystery solved:
Spoiler: show

Then my initial Within Temptation idea was right after all. I'm surprised they've come up with such a well-written song; years ago when they first emerged, I hated everything I heard.

Love their "Love Sins Pain". Haven't heard this one.

P.S. Frown "Love Sins Pain" is their newest
https://frownsk.bandcamp.com/album/lovesinspain

I assume you know about late Crematory, and bands like Darkseed and Heavenwood.

Guess you could check out these:
- Nude "Plastic Planet" (more of a gothic rock)
https://nudeband.bandcamp.com/album/plastic-planet

- Dark "Endless Dream of Sadness"/"Seduction"/"Revolution" (from more metallish to more and more gothrock/lovemetal)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... LMS8-MPYpX

- Diabolique "Wedding the grotesque" (gothrock meets dark metal) / "The Black Flower" + "Butterflies" (gothrock) / "The Green Goddess" (softer kind of gothic rock, and in general pretty unique stuff)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HSQn2S_vpM

- Throes of Dawn "The Great Fleet of Echoes" (gothic metal I guess, but more atmospheric) / "Our Voices Shall Remain" (like previous but even softer, and perhaps not quite as good)
https://throesofdawn.bandcamp.com

- Evenfall "Cumbersome" (gothic doom metal? but uptempo and not depressive at all, and accessible due to female vocs, has some better songs and some worse ones)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... q-0gKjEzjm

- Anything :-) by Scream Silence (gothrock with softer lovemetalish touch)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNQB3RcHt4g

- On Thorns I Lay "Crystal Tears" (a must! perhaps other albums too - later are more gothrocky, older are more into melodic deathdoom, all worth attention but perhaps older ones are not on topic)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHKGGgKt-4A

- The Mist of Avalon "Tears EP" + "Here and After" (gothrock with a modern touch)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRyN5fevTXo

- The Mist of Avalon "Dinya" (latest by The Mist of Avalon, softer and more lovemetalish)
https://echozone.bandcamp.com/album/dinya

Maybe I'll come up with more stuff later.

Ghost Brigade, anyone? Really nice goth metal/rock that hits the spot every time. Not life changing music, but just solid writing.

I only know "Until Fear No Longer Defines Us", which i've tried to listen to several times, but have never enjoyed. I'm not big into Opeth and they remind me of them, so it tends to clash with what I want to hear. I do have a couple friends who really do swear by Ghost Brigade, though.

And thank you, Sauron. I will begin checking those out!

I saw GB open for Amorphis some 7 years ago, and they were the worst kind of hipster posers I had seen up til then :/ not bashing, just as a counterpoint :)

'Century Child' from Nightwish is perhaps the most gothic album ever made.

Thoughts?
