Post Why do you listen to doom metal?

So I have personally just gotten into the doom metal genre over the last year or so, becoming utterly fascinated with it out of nowhere. I started with Electric Wizard and Crowbar and have gradually come to a point where I find myself several times a week listening to a full album of a new doom metal band whilst I game or browse, even as I lay falling asleep I like to have the sounds of doom washing over me and filling my room with it's distinctive atmosphere (incense assisted). I've always felt that music has had a huge effect on me and the way I feel, but I can't really nail down an accurate description of exactly what I mean by that.

So I was wondering if others on this forum could share with me how they feel whilst listening to doom metal, why they listen to doom metal and what they think it does to them, out of fascination and curiosity.

I listen to doom metal because I'm deeply disappointed by life. I'm a rather funny guy though and socially integrated, although not so well maybe. I have regular bursts of hatred against many things, people, fashions, social decorum - you name it, I must have some negative points to raise in every case.
All in all, I feel a sense of void and pointessness in life that is musically expressed by Doom and by none other genre. I'm deeply connected with this music, not necessarily by the lyrics mind you, but by the whole atmosphere of gloom and doom. That's why I have a hard time with more groovy-swinging-"funky" doom metal acts that fail to convey the moods I'm after.

For me, it was a natural evolution from growing up listening to a mixture of prog, early metal and goth from the late 70s onwards.

Good Doom has the same essential qualities found in the best of those genres - challenging, hooks into both intellectual and emotional appeal, underground and subversive enough to have integrity, and genuinely attempting to create a believable and immersive experience. Something you don't really find so much in more mainstream, or "entertaining" styles.

It helps that I'm a miserable bastard and doom is the natural soundtrack to my miserable life, too... :D

musically, exactly what endemoniada said... just a natural progression, without the early metal, though... :D

it was for me a natural evolution from being sick hearing the shite on the radio at home, in shops, lifts, taxis and on television.

I decided I wasn't going to spend my life being sick, at some point.

you use way too many smilies, guys, considering it being a doom metal forum. Your statements might be taken with more than a pinch of salt...

speaking of which, B. are you familiar with this?
Echoes of Mount Ida by the Greek band Automaton. I don't know, but it is the best atmospheric sludge I've listened to, in a long, long while...
Check it out, because you were speaking so highly about Sea of Bones, yet in my opinion this is the shit.

well, they dub themselves as psychedelic doom, which in part is correct, but I hear a lot of sludge as well...
Purely sublime material, and their tribal / ritualistic parts are hypnotizing...

I bought the album; well, that is very good. Some self-indulgence towards the end of track 3 where it becomes over-long, but that's a minor point. It's less crushing than Sea of Bones, more "academic" so to speak, there's an obvious Desert Rock influence in the guitar work. Excellent stuff indeed.

Glad you liked it. I was sure you would, as we kinda share similar tastes, and, I just made you spend 8 dollars...
That said, kill me if I understand what you see in Sea of Bones other than the usual routine...
