 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
Omit should be great in theory and I really want to like them, but never clicked with me. I agree they do not really manage to keep the listener's attention, that's why I'm asking before investing time=)
edit: still, the singer's voice is amazing=)

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
didn't even know it was in the pipeline... recommend the rest? I would listen to their output on YouTube or whatever first.... then you can make your mind up. I quite like a few songs, but it gets rather repetitive on the long run.

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
I think Kris means their MDB cover is the only stuff he knows from them... If you ask me the question, I wouldn't recommend anything they did beside that. I know d.mimosa is a fan though.

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
If anybody is interested in Runemagick, they are back after 10 years, here is the first single from the new album "Evoked From Abysmal Sleep" (out end of June). The song is kinda nice, not too straightforward death/doom as I remember them sounding: https://runemagick.bandcamp.com/track/r ... le-version

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
If you except Envenom and some songs scattered here and there on other albums, Runemagick have always been rather straightforward, unspectacular old-school Death Doom, always sticking to an overall mid-tempo pace. What I like about them is the murky, gloomy atmosphere they manage to create with very simple means. Their style of riffing is very peculiar too. Envenom is their most funerary release, if I remember correctly. That is not a band I particularly value and I don't come back often to the couple of albums by them that I have, I must say...

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
Runemagick started with more uptempo deathmetallish sound (who remembers The Supreme Force and Curse of the Dark Rune?), getting slower and slower, and after 3-rd album or so absorbing more of that "heavy blues" in their sound.
They used to have some particularly good tracks in these early albums (Demonstrosity, Death Collector, Abyss of Desolation, Longing for Hades, Dreamvoid Serpent, and the two tracks from their debut mentioned above), but then a lot of more bland ones indeed. Though their stuff was always consistent and coherent, never really sucked - just never really excelled much too.
I liked the earlier stuff more I must say, and lost track after the first several releases. But then they had also one very strong album in the slow era recently - the Invocation of Magick.
It would be interesting to hear what they will release - they might've never reached #1 positions, but also never really sucked.

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
I also like their kind of hyptnotic rhythm, very typical of them. As you say: nothing bad, nothing excellent. Still some notches above average.

Also With The Dead, the latest version of Cathedral.
Would you include SubRosa in there?

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
Also Yob and Ufomammut. And sometimes my band Camel of Doom. That'll give you a good overview of the genre - Sleep are on the groovier side, but also like long trancelike songs (read my review of their first album for 20 years on the main site, I reviewed it a week ago or so). Electric Wizard are heavy on the retro side, Yob are really heavy and quite metal. Ufomammut are trippy as hell. Camel of Doom have ripped off all of those at some point, but I think we had our own vibe too. Or join any Doom group on facebook except ours. You'll begin to believe that Stoner Doom is the only subgenre after a while...

If you're craving for more abstract, bleak and morose FD like Funeral Moth and Hyponic wityh something of the utter despair of Longing For Dawn, check this out: https://arakk.bandcamp.com/releases

 Re: The General Recommendation Thread
I'm going to give Witchsorrow a bit of an underdog push on that one, just 'cos they're very cool, and I've been dealing with them recently. But it's real difficult with Stoner/Doom - you kinda have to run the whole gamut from the UK EW- to the US Sleep-inspired family trees, so you've got more or less everything from Black Moth to Windhand to take in, plus all the Italian Paul Chain descendants like L'Impero Delle Ombre, and mad Greek bands like Sadhus (The Smoking Community) as outliers. And of course old favourites like UFOMammut, and you could always buy Camel Of Doom (who are damn good) albums just to keep kris happy! One of those things that actually needs a bit of narrowing down for any really sensible recommendations...

It's pretty hard to make drone/doom that is exciting but this one manages pretty well:
