Thanks all for the recommendations.

The thing is when I listen to new band, I would like to focus on listening to the music and doing nothing else...for that reason sometimes I really find it hard to discover new bands.

If I don't focus on the music, I will feel guilty lol...

Other issues I am having, when there is a classic release by a classic doom band that is considered must listen for any doom metal fan, that is praised by reviewers, and I don't enjoy it, I also feel guilty... and I keep saying to my self, I must be missing something!!

you're a very complicated guy! :D

I say music is about chemical reactions in the brain. If you don't like it, it's not your fault, it's your inner chemistry that isn't reacting positively.

I think that is very true... :D

I'll give you an example..

In Kostas review for Cathedral Forest of Equilibrium (which is considered classic and must hear):
"Cathedral produced one of the slowest, heaviest and most depressive albums ever. The atmosphere this band manages to create in 'Forest of Equilibrium' is absolutely suffocating and utterly depressive"

I could not find anything depressive there, since 2002 or 2003 (when I read the review) I keep asking my self.. did I miss something there??

I don't know, but depressive to me something like Anathema's Serenades, Loss's Despond, My Dying Bride's the dreadful hours, Shape of Despair's ALL releases....etc

I think the reviews when d-m.com was in its starting years were written with a certain degree of hype!!

Maybe I am wrong...

Yeah two of my all time favourites (but Cathedral Stoner?)!

Obviously. Together with Sleep, Cathedral is one of the pioneers in Stoner Doom branch. Just listen to "Ride" from The Ethereal Mirror:

At my point of view, that's a prototypical Stoner Doom Metal song. Most of the time I use to listen to a Stoner Doom band/song, "Ride" comes immediately to my mind.

Don't worry, man. It seems like I have a similar problem... only in some cases. For example, I like Scott Reagers even more than the other Scott. But critics and reviewers praised a lot Wino and specially Born Too Late as "the best Saint Vitus album". And I think I'm really missing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. :finger:

Talking about Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium, I totally agree. "Depressive" may not be the correct term to describe that album. But remember one thing: what is "depressive" for me, not necessarily is "depressive" for you or "depressive" for others. Every man and every doomster in the world has got his own feelings towards a band, a record or a particular song. Music transmits different kind of feelings, depending in every ones background, knowledge, experiences and mood. So, my friend... I'll give you a lovely advice:

no comment. :D

You must also take into account the age at which those first reviews where published. With time going by, more and more bands came to birth and the points of comparison multiplied. And then, there's the reviewer's own personal experience...

Judging from this sample, the sophomore of With the Dead sounds much more interesting, whiff of Forest of Equilibrium and Teeth of the Lion Rule The Divine in there, tasty mix!

Does anybody have a deeper opinion / recommondation on Elphant Tree?

Was listening to Aphotic Stillness Grows release, not bad, if you like Katatonia Brave Murder Day and Sound of Decay.

The website does not list them in the band list. Are they not considered Doom?

In general, the bandlist does not contain every doom band, probably because someone has to manage it and it's a time consuming task.

As for Aphotic, I feel they are kind of borderline between doom and doomy=) Btw as far as I remember their split with Dusk was reviewed here=)

I think the main source of bands being on the bandlist these days is bands submitting themselves. Of course we add any bands that we review or interview that are missing. There are some historical ones that are missing but we are slowly going through these and getting them added. Remember - everything is slow in doom :;):

I think he must've meant it's a depressing experience knowing you're about to hear some Cathedral. A band whose only real upside is that they're not Electric Wizard, in my opinion...

It's not a problem. There's a huge difference in understanding/respecting the contribution bands have made to particular genres, and having any obligation to like what they actually produced along the way. Otherwise we'd all be stuck in Elvis-worship for taking the roots of the whole white western rock'n'roll movement into the mainstream, and making everything since then a possibility... :D

I can't have a deep opinion on that band, as you've just introduced me to them. It's nice though, ethereal and accessible, I'm listening to their eponym now. I don't like the echoing effect on the voice, sounds like a system, the whole is a bit too safe, it's a bit "stoner pop" to me.

Speaking of bandlist, Dwaal of Norway hasn't been added yet (nor are they on the Metal Archives, in case you want to score some points there).

Yeah, after two loops I agree. The sitar is nice, but in total the sound is not really heavy (enough for me).

I listened to "Watching from a distance" now completely. But I'm disapointed. One song sounds exactly as the other. I think there is not even one (!) guitar solo. No alteration in speed.
Pretty boring.

I need to take this back. In fact I really enjoy the album by now. Instrumental wise it reminds me of Katatatonia's Dance of December Souls. Very reduced. Very slow. Very sad.

Besides that the drum sound on 'Bridges' is incredible.
