Post Bleak chicks

This thread could be about a particular style I like a lot - doomy, ethereal and above all bleak projects fronted by a woman. (no heavy, stonery, or growly stuff=)

Here are some examples, feel free to propose more:

Darkher:

Spoiler: show

Trees of Eternity:

Spoiler: show

Fvnerals:

Spoiler: show

Ison (I'd suggest Heike's side project :LOR3L3I: - it's quite electronic but very nice)

Spoiler: show

King Woman:

Spoiler: show

Her side project Miserable:

Spoiler: show

Muscle and Marrow

Spoiler: show

Birds of Passage:

Spoiler: show

Do you know Chrysta Bell? She's one of those David Lynch's creatures - like most of the stuff DL put his fingers on, it turns out to be very sentimental, I love it! :D

Spoiler: show

of the same ethereal mood is the music of Tropic of Cancer:

Spoiler: show

Lethe are far less doomy, but still damn melancholic:

Spoiler: show

Gold Zebra play a depressive kind of new-wave tinged synth pop sometimes in French, sometimes in English:

Your thread got me started looking for more!

I've found out a band named Volkova, female-fronted droney slow-downed ebm, sort of:

Interesting thread! I have a soft spot for this kind of stuff, so I'll need to check out the recommendations I haven't heard yet... From a strictly doomy perspective, Ava Inferi and Skumring might fit the bill, but I'm sure you know those already, and they're certainly more 'Metal' than the projects you've mentioned. If you take away the Doom (and even more so, the Metal) element, you end up with stuff like Chrysta Bell as suggested by bapho, i.e. 'proper' Ethereal (which is an actual genre). I'll post some recommendations if you're into that sort of thing. The doomier stuff, unfortunately, seems to be a very small niche, but one with tremendous potential, I daresay... Grey November come to mind, though: https://gsproduction.bandcamp.com/album/novembre-gris
Another band worth looking into is Avrigus, though they employ some male vocals, as well:

Post Re: Bleak chicks

Thanks a lot for the recommendations!!

Yes I'm talking exactly about this fantastic niche of doomy but not really metallish stuff. Which seems quite hard to really hit. Skumring are wonderful, but give me a completely different feeling. And there are lots of wondeful female vocalists with ethereal voices (Marissa Nadler is a fave) but they lack the slow droney rock chords.

I think the purest examples of this are Darkher and the recent Fvnerals. I also find Birds of Passage really unique for her subtle droney pop.

From the above mentioned Chrysta Bell is the most fascinating one. Also I love the Tropic of Cancer song. Avrigus are nice but the symphonic parts kinda bug me=) Grey November are a great discovery (although the vocals have a bit of a gothic nuance at times that always makes me picture a dominatrix, hehe.=)

Volkova is quite interesting but somehow unsettling, although you can argue that Muscle and Marrow are also unsettling. And if we widen the bounderies bands like Universe217, Cold In Berlin, Chelsea Wolfe could also fit the bill. I'd also welcome suggestions like Eivor Palsdottir (some of her more restrained stuff is very nice)

Keep them coming, even if they are not properly "doomy". Anything that's dark enough=))

Here are some others that come to mind:

Black Mare:

Spoiler: show

Worm Ouroboros (while I liked the previous album this one is really a step forward):

Spoiler: show

Debater (not as much as I'd wish=):

Spoiler: show

Debater make me this of the thrid and the Mortal, which on some of their songs could well fit the bill.

Then, you have Menace Ruine, a doomy Dead Can Dance

And because I like keeping supporting this sweet babe :inlove: :

One band that I feel pulled this style off really well was The River. They were never "ethereal", but rather incredibly bleak and raw doom with a really good female singer. I've been really into King Woman's newest album the past couple of days, and I realized it sounds A LOT like Drawing Down the Sun. Just compare these two songs.

I just saw that the ISON debut has been re-pressed, which is good news. But seriously - 12 € plus shipping is a little steep for an EP, I think!

it's a digipack and it has the standard length of an lp anyway. I paid 15€ for the first edition, shipping included.

Well, as you should know, the fact that it's a digipack only makes it less attractive to me. :D What's the exact total length?

Hmm... I'll have to give it some serious thought, and another listen. Considering the re-run is limited to 200 copies, I probably shouldn't wait too long, though. And chances are it may be worth more than the asking price someday, depending on whether the project has a certain breakthrough in the underground.

I was spinning the Mansion cd, and this little bastard is only 21' long! I'd swear I paid a normal price for this jewel case cd though!

First of all, could everybody please 'spoiler' their links? The thread is taking increasingly long to load...

I've been listening to some of the links above. In all truth, there isn't much Doom among them, which broadens the perspective. Most of the above artists aren't atmospheric enough for my own personal taste, but I'm listening to Noêta as I'm typing this and finding it pretty promising!

The more Rock-oriented acts made me think of Jex Thoth, whose last album might qualify by extension:
Spoiler: show

And there's Aelter:
Spoiler: show

The calmer, atmospheric stuff like Birds of Passage, on the other hand, caught to mind a unique album I return to every once and again, Songs of Sex and Death by Amber Asylum; very nocturnal and deeply captivating music (and most definitely bleak):
Spoiler: show

Getting into actual Ethereal, there's stuff like:
Spoiler: show

Spoiler: show

And a classic act of the Ethereal movement, though certainly a matter of taste - strange mixture of ultra-bleak and ultra-cheesy (personally, I love it :D):
Spoiler: show

I'd also like to recommend the brilliant Anna von Hausswolff; some of her material has a real Skepticism vibe to it, such as this track:
Spoiler: show

Her live performances are very intense, too.

Sure, I'll do that tomorrow. I'll also upload the predecessor, which - in my opinion - is even better. She's a very eccentric and authentic artist.

I like where this thread is going=)))

Btw, anyone familiar with Diamanda Galás' discography - which record is a good place to start (some of the less unnerving stuff possibly...)?

Chelsea Wolfe is pretty much the definition of a bleak chick, isn't she?

And this project, Fever Ray, which I've just found out about.... I'm in love...!
