Post "Brutal" Death Doom

I'm looking for some "energic" doom, slow but possessed, vehement. Something akin to Ophis, Syrach, Konvent.. Stuff like this, my list isn't very long! :D

Any suggestions?

Energetic doom, the worst kind of doom=)))

You have to narrow down your search criteria, as there are way too many, obviously you know stuff like Coffins, Anhedonist, Indesinence, Sinistrous Diabolus, Lycus, Spectral Voice, Inverloch, etc famous bands (let alone Dusk, Winter, Disembowelment, Thorr's Hammer). For me they are all energetic and savage, so why aren't they on your list, what quality is missing from them?

Otherwise from the ones you might not know -

Bellaras are one of the few pure slow death/doom I really like:

Weightlessness are a band that got quite the acclaim with the first and one demo but sadly went nowhere afterwards

Ealdath is made of members from Aldebaran and sounds a bit like a mixture between Aldebaran and Thorr's Hammer=)

I know everything you mention, but Ealdath and Sinistrous dabolus. Thanks!

Well, I think it's something in the vocals in the three examples I give that are approaching a kind of "barking" growl that brings about the kind vibe I'm after: aggressive, demonic..

I' must say I'mnot super familiar with Inverloch or Coffins, I'll give them a new listen, although maybe naively I'd have described them as doomy death metal; brutal doom is something else... Stuff Like Indesinence or Lycus or Anhedonist are too funerary-sounding. I wasn't really thinking of that kind of atmosphere.

But yeah, they all might be worth revisiting for the occasion. :D

Beyond Belief early demoes have barking vocals, Cryptophobism is an obscure Bulgarian band with a nice death/doom demo from the 90s. Insanity Reigns Supreme are awful for me, but they are well regarded. Paramaecium early stuff is also quite brutal.

But generally if you find Indesinence or Anhedonist to be too funerary-sounding, than I do not know what to suggest=))) Unfortunately I know no other band that comes close to Ophis, which is a shame.

Yes, I also thought of Insanity reigns Supreme. :D

To me, Indesinence is "extreme death doom" , that's the tag I give them, like Evoken... I listened yesterday to Inverloch Dusk..Subside and the slower track on this Ep "The Menin Road" sounds a lot like Indesinence.

A band like Mythological Cold Towers could fit the bill too... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvIb6pZji7U&t

As for a band akin to Ophis, di you know Treurwilg? Speaking of them, I find out they have a new album streaming. Very good project that I of course add to my list. :D

Thanks unwashed_villager, I'll have a listen to the bands you suggest... Although I fear this is not at all what I'm after ... But you never know (I'm right now listening to Tzompantli and each times it ceases to be Death metal, it sounds good!)

In fact, now that I'm brought to analyse those bands I mentioned, I see more clearly what ties them: the compositions are rather drawn-out, the music is crushing and atmospheric and in each case, it's supporting a rather aggressive, threatening growl. It's this contrast I'm after I guess...

Brutal? I think they are far from brutal...

I don't have recommendations, because I don't like brutal or tortured stuff... I'm not a teenager anymore...

Post Re: "Brutal" Death Doom

Nah, but as I tried to explain, I'mnot looking for brutal doom that would be just doomy death metal or super crushing stuff.o It's more about a contrast between brutal vocals and crushing, drawn-out sounds that would convey a kind of haunted, vehement vibe.... MCT vocals are "brutal", they do have this aggressive edge I want... But on second thought maybe it's not the best example of all though... :D

Anyway, I have a terrible headache today... I'd rather listen to something else. :D

I do not think it fits the bill, but lets not forget that Virgin Black's Fortissimo has vocals that are really rough and aggressive compared to the otherwise melodic drawn out guitars. An amazing album that is...

Bapho: I want something brutal
Also Bapho: I have a terrible headache now.

:p

Playing faster every so often comes with the territory. I’ll have a look in my collection if I find something like MCT but I’m drawing a blank right now.

They have aggressive vocals but it’s not really “barky”. They only use guitars for atmosphere as far as I remember (it's been a while):
Esogenis - s/t
https://esogenesidoom.bandcamp.com/albu ... doom-metal

I really like this one. Vocals are nice as well:
Phobocosm - Bringer of Drought
https://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com ... of-drought

More atmospheric but I wouldn’t call this brutal exactly:
Oak – Lone
https://oakdoom.bandcamp.com/album/lone ... doom-metal

More fun groovy stuff just because:
Grime – Circle of molesters
https://argentorecords.bandcamp.com/alb ... -molesters
