Post Female-fronted Doom (an attempt at an exhaustive list)

In recent years female artists have massivey invested the Doom underworld. When they handle the guitar, the drums or the bass, they live up to all expectations and their dedication can’t be questioned. More decisively, they also took over the last bastion of men : the microphone. And there lies the difference.

The meeting of Doom rhythms and a female voice (which does not hide under grunts - these being after all nothing but a convenient disguise that masks the personality of a voice ( and its flaws ) - but still, there are grunters in this list) - releases odd and, let's say it, almost erotic vibes; it’s Eve cast away from Paradise and roaming in a barbaric world. Or Lilith enjoying chaos.

At his best, a female voice conveys rich meaningful expressions – the range is fragile, high-pitched, languid, depressed; the most talented among them give the impression to strip bare , to engage in a greater commitment and with less modesty that men, spitting their guts, to tell who they are with an utmost sincerity. When they sing, it makes their physical presence more tangible, they seem to bring the music to a more concrete world and yet – often- more poetic. Most often they also write the lyrics they sing; if it is sometimes a mish-mash of corny folklore about witches, coven and other magic spells, they also remind us that they live in the same world than we are and it inspires them the same wonder, excitement and disgust .

We wanted to compile this list in tribute to female-fronted Doom. There’s one single criterion: a woman should be the lead singer; if a man sings too, his part should be secondary. All of the following groups are classified by genre.

Feel free to contribute.

It Will Come are among my favourite female fronted doom bands out there. Great stuff, but unfortunately too short lived and too few doom aficionados know about this great band...

you forgot about old Atrox, having a GREAT female vocalist and some doom oriented fucked up metal in general.

The only real doom album they made was Mesmerized, which also had some pretty bad male vocals. :/

Lethian Dreams for Atmospheric Doom

Evictus for Gothic/Doom

https://soundcloud.com/evictus

Raving Season for Gothic/Doom (both clean and harsh female vocalists)

Salome for Sludge/Doom

I'll surely be back later when I remember others. :p

Cheers!

Yes, Atrox is only death doom on their first, and the male voice is predominant on that one. That's an album I like though...

What would be the album to buy from Left Hand Solution? Fevered or Light Shines Black?

I also need to get hold of that Evictus album...

Nice... atmospheric with some death/doom thrown in... the two female singers are actually pretty good...

"Fevered" definitely. "Light Shines Black" is more of a Rock album. "Shadowdance" seems to be quite good, too, but it's hard to find.

Kudos for compiling it all so neatly. I still disagree with some of your categorisations, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course. :) I still think Grey November should be included even though there's no YouTube link to be found... Few people know about this band, which should change.

there's also that band, Blood Ov, But I can't find any worthwhile links.
http://www.lastfm.fr/music/Blood+Ov

I forgot about Grey November; I'll try and find something. Cheers, I'll by Fevered then.

edit: oh, my bad! I remember Grey November, I have the double album! :D yes it's very "literary", with many spoken-passages. I mostly remember a male voice though...

Post Re: Female-fronted Doom (an attempt at an exhaustive list)

as you know, I have a hard time with the "gothic doom" label; to me, pretty much everything that usually gets this tag is atmo doom.... ;)

I'm with Merch about Raving Season being atmo doom here...

Post Re: Female-fronted Doom (an attempt at an exhaustive list)

I know of no double album by Grey November. The only one I know is "The Fall of the House of Usher" which has melodic female vocals throughout long sections, but also male spoken passages in other tracks. In fact, the album shows a relatively clear division into two distinct halves. The first two songs off that album (if I recall correctly) would be of particular interest here.

There's a difference between Gothic Doom and Atmospheric Doom even though there are indeed many borderline cases. Omit would be such a borderline case, for instance. To at least try a vague (and perhaps subjective) distinction, Gothic Doom tends to be opulent, romantic, but hardly experimental whereas Atmosperic Doom combines melodic Doom (often with a Death Doom basis) with atmospheric outside elements, preferrably acoustic passages or other kinds of calm interludes, sometimes also lots of keyboards/orchestral arrangements (as in the case of Avrigus or Omit) which don't serve as mere background textures as in Gothic Doom, but constitute an atmosphere of their own. This makes Atmospheric Doom more experimental in a sense; it transcends the boundaries of Doom and also those of Metal in general. Some of it has little to do with Metal at all throughout long sections (cf. Amaranth, Avrigus, The 3rd and the Mortal). This is not the case with Gothic Doom, which may have a few calmer interludes, but generally remains quite strictly within the confines of the genre. Its atmosphere, albeit a central driving force behind the music, is rather stereotypical (without using this as a negative criterion!) in that it shows little individuality, instead aiming to achieve a very specific emotional effect which constitutes much of the subgenre's identity. Atmospheric Doom is more of an umbrella term for something that is actually quite heterogeneous. There's not the typical Atmospheric Doom sound, whereas there surely is such a thing for Gothic Doom. As in every genre, bands may show different degrees of individuality, and Ava Inferi is indeed a fairly individual band which adds some experimentation, especially due to the Fado influences on the third album or the long calm sections on the debut. But for the most part, their music remains clearly categorisable.

Raving Season is Gothic Doom, but it has some orchestral elements to it too... it's atmospheric, so I would call it atmospheric gothic death/doom... :D

How Like A Winter is a pretty solid example of gothic doom, Raving Season seems to fall under the atmospheric umbrella based on that song, rather enjoyable too. I'm going to have to go through this thread when I have time.

Also, it would be cool if the op post could be hidden in a few different spoiler tags (Which don't seem to be enabled yet?), opening and replying to this thread takes forever...
