heh, that's not what I meant... I just thought you only play solo... had not really looked into Memoirs before. I just remembered those photos of you playing live somewhere...

It was all d.mimøsa's idea, really, to have a fallback option in case anyone dropped out of the project partway through - it needed to be something we could have fair control over, so he put together the base track and turned it over to some of the other people already heavily involved to enhance it with their own contributions. In the end, though we had enough material to go ahead regardless, it turned out to be so good we made space for it as a bonus (that's why it's out of chronological sequence as the album closer). I can't vouch for this particular incarnation (though I'd personally like to hear more of it), but maybe on our next release we'll persuade him to do something similar

he dropped it casually, then got on his bike, stumped out his cigar and rode into the sunset...

Re: "A Lake Of Ghosts" - the Doom-metal.com MDB Tribute
Here are my liner notes that appear in the booklet; they explain most of it: | | | | Quote: Among my shortlist of MDB tracks that worked well on the piano, “She Is the Dark” caught my particular fancy. The unlikely contrast between the song’s aggressive, dark edge (including the extreme vocals) and a fragile piano-based interpretation seemed very exciting. Additionally, this happens to be the first MDB song I’ve ever heard, although their music didn’t really click with me until I listened to Turn Loose the Swans. After finishing the Memoirs track, I had a feeling I couldn’t just abandon my ideas for “She Is the Dark” and considered to record them as a solo effort just for the fun of it. For a while, we at Doom-metal.com planned to keep it as an expedient in case another band had to back out. But after giving it some more thought, I came up with the idea to turn it into something special instead: a collaboration between several musicians involved in the tribute album that could serve as an interesting bonus to the project. I would provide the basic piano arrangement and some vocals and coordinate everyone’s contributions. Me and my colleagues contacted some of the bands and, after some discussion and uncertainty, I ended up working with the three-piece line-up you can hear in this unusual version. It’s been a rewarding new experience to be working with artists from the Doom underground, and it has sparked a renewed motivation to get creatively involved with the genre. Besides, I am grateful for the chance to pay additional tribute to MDB by way of this collaboration: they started the chain reaction that allowed me to get into so many other great bands and eventually led me to Doom-metal.com and to writing my own Doom material. Thus, they’ve been a truly life-changing discovery. | | | | |
I'm planning to keep the project active as a platform for piano-based cover versions of Doom Metal songs with changing collaborators. However, that's still a very vague plan, considering I'm currently caught up in several other time-consuming projects. I was joking.

A little insight into the name of the tribute? Is it named after the mdb song (so we have someone that is a huge fan of that song=) or it was chosen because it sounds nice (indeed it does=)?

as someone entirely uninvolved in the title selection, I'd say... both?

Re: "A Lake Of Ghosts" - the Doom-metal.com MDB Tribute
A bit of both, but actually we'd already decided on the cover art. By that point, so it really had to be a title that fitted in with the artistic concept of water, gloom and MDB. 'A Lake of Ghosts' just seemed a really natural fit, on many different levels, including the idea of it being a tribute and trying to give some of their many songs a different form. And it does sound rather pleasing to the ear

yes, this is how I explained my idea of the cover art to the others, nearly one year ago (!!!) : Then I found that image and Mike thought we should use a 'water-based' song title to match it... The rest is history.

will you be sending any review copies out to magazines, etc? (I'm not saying you should, just asking if...)

Interesting... I think said album is one of their weakest moments...

I'm certainly willing to: making a few enquiries at the moment. Any suggestions for suitable publications are welcome!

Not sure if it is a good idea, but you might want also make a non-public digital (mp3) version of this release to spread among the reviewers.

Re: "A Lake Of Ghosts" - the Doom-metal.com MDB Tribute
um, I don't know how many publications you're willing to bother with... Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance would probably give you a review, the former in particular "likes" mdb a lot. Iron Fist is too old school, they might review it, but I wouldn't bet on it, and if they did I'd bet it wouldn't be "very" favourable. Metal Hammer UK *might* give you a short review in the "underground" section in the last pages. I'd be surprised if Kerrang or Classic Rock bothered with it at all. that's for the UK mags. if you're willing to approach other countries', there are some where mdb are a bit better received than others (Germany, Eastern Europe)... and I'll second Bewitched's idea, don't waste digis on mags... if I see a review, I'll post about it here
