Post Need help finding an old funeral doom band

Hi,

I used to be into funeral doom around 2006 - 2008. I sold all my cds in 2010 sadly and have not listened to funeral doom since then. I have only just started listening to some of the bands again.

Back in 2007 I was listening to a funeral doom band that I believe was from the Middle East. I remember ordering some cds from the owner of the band (it is a solo project) and he sent me them. I used to talk to him on myspace.

From what I remember about this band which is a one man project the artist used to wear what looked like a keffiyeh over his head. There is a black and white photograph of him on metal archives from what I can remember. Unfortunately I cannot find this band. I was wondering if anyone could help me find it. It will be on metal archives somewhere and probably this website but I cannot remember the name. Thanks.

I immediately thought of 1000 Funerals.

The photo on Ma shows the guy with what looks like a plain beanie

I don't know that band to well. I remember having their first release somewhere, but I hardly listened to it.

Hi thanks for your help. Unfortunately that is not the band I am thinking of but that is a good find I will check them out.

The band I am thinking of is a solo-artist just one guy. Back in the day a lot of people used to laugh at his display pic (not in a bad way) it was just a bit of send up, he posted it on myspace and it was on metal archives. He literally had a towel over his head in a dark room. It was a close-up black and white photograph. I think he released quite a few cds but some of them not officially produced and they were on cdr. I will keep looking.

Hey, the description you give fits Mistress of the Dead spot-on (metal-archives.com/bands/Mistress_of_the_Dead). The only difference is that it's not Middle East, but Eastern Europe.

Funny. It definitely looks like a towel. It's a very good project though.

I have direct access to our database and queried all bands with funeral doom as primary or secondary genre. Below is a list from all Middle Eastern countries that we have on the site. Plus Tunisia which is North Africa but Arab so maybe confused.

  • 1000 Funerals - Iran
  • MelancholicA - Iran
  • Innzmouth - Syria
  • Omination - Tunisia
  • Anlipnes - Turkey
  • Xoresth - Turkey
  • MausoleuM - United Arab Emirates
  • Qabr - United Arab Emirates

In case it wasn't one of those, I've expanded the list to include ALL doom genres. Not all these countries are middle eastern, but sometimes get classed as such.

  • Litham - Algeria
  • 1000 Funerals - Iran
  • Dark Matter - Iran
  • Ulver Av Høsten - Iran
  • MelancholicA - Iran
  • Unperishable Fall - Iran
  • Substance for God - Israel
  • Vacuous Gaze - Israel
  • Murderous Wolves - Israel
  • Blood Shot Eye - Israel
  • vAv - Israel
  • Edellom - Israel
  • Fatum Aeternum - Israel
  • Voidal - Israel
  • Dukatalon - Israel
  • Moth Eaten Dream - Israel
  • Falling Leaves - Jordan
  • Dethroned - Lebanon
  • Kimaera - Lebanon
  • Sifr - Pakistan
  • Forgotten - Saudi Arabia
  • Grieving Age - Saudi Arabia
  • Innzmouth - Syria
  • Olive - Syria
  • Omination - Tunisia
  • Dimness Through Infinity - Turkey
  • Mezarkabul/Pentagram - Turkey
  • Tears Of Beggar - Turkey
  • Anlipnes - Turkey
  • Vassago - Turkey
  • My Garden - Turkey
  • Secropiagor - Turkey
  • Dead Wish - Turkey
  • Sencezium - Turkey
  • Thomrukh - Turkey
  • Xoresth - Turkey
  • MausoleuM - United Arab Emirates
  • Tragedian - United Arab Emirates
  • Qabr - United Arab Emirates

Thanks all for your help. I can confirm the band is mistress of the dead. not sure why I thought the artist was from the middle east, memory trick. the guy behind the project Vlad Cristea Vales I used to talk to him on myspace back in 2007.

I see in 2018 he brought out a coffin box set with 15 cds every cd he ever made. I might buy it but it's about 200$, definitely worth it though and only 100 were made.

I also used to listen to a funeral doom band I think it was just one female behind the project, I am pretty sure that one was definitely from the middle east. I will go through that list and hopefully find that one as well. If I can remember correctly she had to give up the music because of her religion or something.

The sole Fd bands I know of that are led by a woman are Believe in Nothing and Murkrat. But they're not from Middle East.

I'm pretty sure he refers to 1000 Funerals, which you mentioned at the beginning.

Even though they are now a multi-member band and metal archives lists the debut album as having a line-up of four individuals, back in the mid-00s when the album came out it was widely circulated/rumored (or at least this was the only version I knew about 1000 Funerals back then) that the band is a one-woman project from Iran and she quit doing music due to religious reasons.

edit: hehe, funnily, if you check 1000 Funerals bandpage here, it still refers solely to a single woman and the same story behind the band disbandment=)

Btw, Kris's list made me remember Tragedian, does any of you here remember this project, it was at the height of super-amateur but passionate bedroom projects, what times they were!

There was a member here named Funeral Tragedian. Tragedian split up to eventually form Qabr. I mean the band split up, not the guy! :O

I must admit I never listened to their productions...

I forgot about the initial story of 1000 Funerals. Sounds like a good way to get your name talked about anyhow... Maybe it's true though... Is this project still active?

I miss the dude from Jordan or whatever who just used to talk about listening to Evoken on coke and that all other music sucked. And then he was rude to us. :D

The Funeral Tragedian guy was nicer than that.

There've been a bunch of teenage poseurs for sure; I guess this kind of absurd peremptory stance points to very young people, as we all were back then!

I joined when I was 15 in 2005 under another name originally. I feel old now.... damn you guys.

This thread also reminded me to listen to Mistress of the Dead and 1000 Funerals as I haven't heard both in probably 10 years ha.
