Post Paradise Lost "Obsidian" 2020

the press release talks of 80s goth rock and dancefloor fillers, but the leadoff single is doomy enough to post here:

The sixteenth PARADISE LOST studio album, "Obsidian" eschews its immediate predecessors’ gruesome, myopic approach in favour of a richer and more dynamic deluge of black shades. From the deceptive elegance and dual atmospheres of opener 'Darker Thoughts' through to the crushing, baroque doom of war-torn closer 'Ravenghast'; "Obsidian" reveals a band in masterful control of a broad array of vital ideas. Most noticeably, the record boasts several songs that draw heavily from the much-loved, Kohl-encrusted days of ‘80s gothic rock: in particular, newly-minted PARADISE LOST anthem 'Ghosts' is a guaranteed dancefloor-filler at any discerning goth nightclub.

"It's one of the most eclectic albums we have done in some time, we have miserable songs, sad songs ,slow songs and faster songs. Did I mention miserable?" - Nick Holmes.

well, this song is classic Paradise Lost, like they never left their cupboard... dancefloor fillers? Welcome to a revisited "Host" maybe?

This song sucks but the second release, Ghosts, is actually pretty good.

it's hard to believe they once were nearly as big as Metallica and Maiden in europe... sad, too... I'm sure they also think about it on most days.

I've wondered about that as they threw everything away when they were at their peak. I think they've had some good post Draconian Times albums, specifically when they got to In Requiem, but most of what they've done since that album has sounded forced.

The book that came out last year explained with a bit about that. By the point that they were reaching their peak around Draconian Times, Greg just really really didn't have his heart in that type of music anymore. And since they never really were about making money or anything of the kind, they started to explore and well it backfired on the band internally as much as in sale numbers. There were also some label changes as well in there. Worth a read!

I really have to pick up the album when I can, I've found each of their releases to have interesting bits.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's never release in paperback to be honest. I've really missed the boat with some books like The Devil's Cradle which I can't find any used copies for under 50 euros for a book about Finnish black metal :/

Post Re: Paradise Lost "Obsidian" 2020

I'm not too familiar with more modern/mid-level* metal books, but I'd like to think that someone in their management knows that a trade paperback that goes for $10 on amazon will sell far more than a hardback that goes for $25 plus international postage and is only available from a magazine website... it was a dumb move to have it distributed from the US only anyway, it's not rocket science that most of their fanbase is europe-based. anyway, let's hope and wait and see :)

*I mean compared to Ozzy and Lemmy's biographies and the like...
