Post With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Hey, it's been a long long doomy time... luckily I didn't lose my username and password.

Wish you could help me. I'm preparing a 1970-2009 Chronology of Doom Metal, but I need the exact year of two main events:
- the release of issue #1 of Reflections of Doom Zine. I'd help a lot if someone can post an image of the cover page, showing the bands featured on that number
- when did http://www.doom-metal.com start out on cyberspace

I'll appreciate a lot your support. Hails from a peruvian doomster. :gravegrab:

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Welcome back!
Can't help you with Q1, but for Q2 the very earliest files we have on the site are from February 2003, with this explanation:

"This page was made in order to bring doom-metal fans worldwide closer together by way of the Internet. The creative force behind it originates from two people, Aldo Quispel and John Riendeau, whose concern over the severe lack of high quality doom metal related sites led to the emergence of this site. They felt that a page offering both up-to-date information and an unbiased meeting-place concerned with the doom metal genre had been a hitherto unexploited net-niche. The majority of sites at that point were either incomplete, outdated or narrowly focused on just one style of doom, and in extreme cases sometimes even completely misguided as to the genre's attributes and characteristics.

Aldo and John started out aided by fellow Doom enthusiasts Curt and Kurt. The initial release of Doom-metal.com was put together from two previously existing pages: The Doom-metal Netguide (previously maintained by Kurt de Meulemeester) and the #Doom-metal homepage (previously maintained by Aldo Quispel). This release also integrated the #Doom-metal IRC channel and Doom-metal mailinglist (both maintained by John Riendeau) onto the central page on the net."

So unless anyone knows differently, that's almost certainly when the 'official' convergence of various doom-metal namespaces actually became "doom-metal.com".

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Wow! Thanks a lot, endemoniada! :) That was a great explanation; I didn't know how it all started.

By now, I'll used 2003 as the birth year for Doom-metal.com. I hope if some other doomsters from this site could help us and corroborate that information.

Talking about Q1, the only reference I've got from google is this: http://users.telenet.be/denofiniquitybe/revzines.htm
It's really too hard to find something about Reflections of Doom 'Zine. Some belgian doomsters here?? Maybe you've met Jean Mathues.

One more question: is there any other relevant doom metal zine from the 80s, 90s or 00s?? Which one would you think should be mentioned?? If you know the year of the 1st issue and the featured bands on it, please tell me.

Thanks again, endemoniada. When the Chronology is finished, I promise to share it with all of you. Stay Doom! Image

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Older than 2003. Can be visited on the Wayback Machine as far back as November 2000.
http://web.archive.org/web/20001109091500/http://www.doom-metal.com:80/

Unfortunately I when you launch the actual site from this landing page the earliest date it has is March 2001.
http://web.archive.org/web/20010306135809/http://doom-metal.com:80/main.html

This is before I remember it. I first visited (and joined the forum) in 2004. But 2000 seems about right to me based on what others said at the time regarding the age of the community.

Go here to view the site through the years! I use it to visit my beloved stonerrock.com R.I.P.
http://web.archive.org/web/20001001000000*/doom-metal.com

In 2004 that site and here were the only places I went online.

Edit. Oh man, getting mad nostalgia looking at 2004 site and reading ye olde Camel of Doom review :metalhead:

Ah, cool, thanks Kris.

So the historic information's correct, but the date was a little earlier than the files we still possess.

I found this on the disclaimer page:
"The contents of this site, all html, JavaScript, CGI and other code is © 2000 Doom-metal.com and may not be used by third parties unless Doom-metal.com has given written permission. Most graphics are also © 2000 Doom-metal.com. However not every picture has been created by us. Some have been found at random places on the Internet and we just edited them. Credits go to its original creators (please contact us if recognise your work and wish to be credited in name). To be on the save site please always ask us for permission if you wish to use a graphic from this site."

Looks like you are indeed right on the date...

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Hey, thanks again! Things are clearing up: 2000 seems to be the right year. Unless someone knows another version, I'll use that year as a reference for the starting point of Doom-Metal.com.

I've got some trouble with the exact release year of three particular albums:
Touched - NADJA (2002 or 2003???)
Tears from a Grieving Heart - MOURNFUL CONGREGATION (98 or 99???)
Fevered - LEFT HAND SOLUTION (96 or 97???)
If you know the right answer, I'll be very pleased to read it. :)

Seeing the old website brought a lot of memories with it.. :D

Mournful Congregation's Tears from Grieving heart is 1999 most probably.

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

Thank you, guys! The fact of the release year is a bit confussing in some special cases. :/

One more help. I've got no main events during the following years:
1974
1975
1977
Yes, I know. It's a very difficult matter, since the only Doom Metal bands alive at that point were Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Bedemon and Warhorse. If something relevant happened in that years and you consider it as an important fact in Doom Metal history, please tell me. :)

This is a pretty proto-doom record IMO. 1974. As influential on me at least as Sabbath.

1977 saw the explosion of Punk in the mainstream, from which we get Hardcore, and subsequently Sludge.

I appreciate I am grasping at straws here.

well, yes, you are grasping at straw with Red... :D I would say, for that period, bands like Bang - Bang, Budgie, Uriah Heep, Blue Cheer, Atomic Rooster and even Iron Butterfly or Van Der Graaf Generator... in fact, I think VdGG are the doomier of all, atmosphere-wise...

Post Re: With a Little Help From my (Doomed) Friends

1977 - Death SS formed.
The movie Suspiria was released (depends on how much influence you think Goblin had on Doom & the Italian sound, of course). So was Alucarda, which Demon Lung based their sophomore album on.

1975 - Warlord's debut album.

1974 - Pinnacle's Assasin, Budgie's In For The Kill!.

Basically, I agree with Merch, doomier hard/prog rock's probably the best place to look, but most of the real proto-doom I can think of was over and done with by '74, and didn't pick up again until the end of the '70s with bands like Trouble, and the start of the NWOBHM. Anyway, those are the three which spring to mind.
Death SS is a genuinely important influence, though!

Spoiler: show
