Yeah, I have all the stuff Schammasch' have done. They can create very intense atmospheres - I got into them through the black metal scene - however, I think they call themselves avant-garde / extreme. Which is rather pretentious but the quality of their work speaks for itself.

Their album Triangles is a real trip and begs to be consumed in one sitting. It is a three disc affair though so I only go back into it every now and then.

I think I'd have to add both Monarch and Deveikuth, and perhaps Begräbnis - all more Funeral than Sludge, but maybe still in line with what you're after.

I'd hate to have to make 200km, find a bleak accomodation in a godforsaken place and go back totally washed out.
I can stand one gig next door a year when it's Esoteric playing. :D The good thing is that it's so closed to my place that I can go back when I feel like without having the impression to have lost my time. So yeah, I've marked the date. :)

Fair enough! Pretty much the same as my inclination for attending infrequent gigs in Brighton (20 minutes away) as opposed to more regular ones in London (2 hours of traffic-heavy grind each way, even on a bike). Say hello to Greg and Gor and the rest of the guys on my behalf if you get to socialise...!

Post Re: The General Recommendation Thread

Long time ago I used to support a Polish doom metal progenitors (then, now it's called black / death) - PANDEMONIUM
After years I returned to this debut demo tape "Devilri" (1992) and found something interesting indeed.
Listen to this and focus on time 7:00

And then listen to MDB's song Edenbeast.
Any idea what was the primordial composition? Author?

That's just primitive "oriental" style melody, the one in Edenbeast is not the same, but close, but just as close as anything in that scale would be (say, "Hell on the Eastern Front" from Bloodthorn). IMO.

A new full-length for the French Post-doom band Stonebirds. Nothing new, but glorious and catchy all the same, they still have evolved a lot and in the right direction since their split with Stangala, where they played plain Stoner Rock:

Interesting musically, but there's some room for improvement vocalwise, like room the scale of a football stadium... :D
Nah, just some fine tuning, no need for an opera singer either.

Weird Truth is releasing a re-mastered edition of Coronation of the Black Sun by Profetus. The cd will include the band's demo as well:

Acclaimed Japanese label Weird Truth Productions brings you a new release of Finnish doom metal masters PROFETUS. Although originally released in 2009, this gem of a release has been remastered by Dan Lowndes of Resonance Sound Studio which is known for its work with bands like BLOOD INCANTATION, SIGH, CRUCIAMENTUM, etc. Expect sonorous, plodding doom from the depths of human misery, wonderfully expressed using sparse notes and a despondent atmosphere. This hearkens back to the glorious era of bands like THERGOTHON, SKEPTICISM, TYRANNY and ESOTERIC, when this kind of funeral doom was arguably at its peak. Along with this magnificent debut, the label has included their first demo and even a live track as bonus. This is the epitome of funeral doom and all that's special about it.

Track list:
1. Skull of Silence
2. The Eye of Phosphorus
3. Coalescence of Ashen Wings
4. Blood of Saturn
5. Saturine Night
6. Winter Solstice
7. Blood of Saturn (Kuopio live)
