Quick introductory interview.

Interview with Shunyata.
1. Who are you and how did the band get started?

We are Shunyata, an instrumental post-metal/doom/stoner band from The Netherlands.

The band started in 2011, after Kris (lead guitarist and main songwriter) and Sander (ex-rhythm guitarist) had been jamming for a few years and finally just wanted to start a band that would do shows. It didn’t matter what genre, but initially the idea was to play thrash metal. Pretty soon though it turned to Stoner Rock and then when Bart joined on drums in 2012 it evolved to a combination of Stoner/Doom and Post-metal. In 2016 we parted ways with Sander and shortly after that we became a functional 4-piece, working on the band steadily, doing our first shows and making some real progress as a band.

2. Why did you choose Doom, and how would you describe your style?

Not sure how Doom we are since we’ve noticed opinions on what Doom actually is are mixed. But we chose to play what we play because we love the powerful sound and feel of the slow, sluggish riff. It’s also a genre which I think allows for a lot of musical diversity which is great to express a wide range of ideas and feelings. We have a lot of interests that we’d like to express, and we’re all quite concerned with the direction human society seems to be going, particularly environmentally so and to express that complicated issue and everything related to it we need to be able to tap into a wide diversity of options I think.

Therefore the simplest description of our style is post-metal, because it’s an ambiguous term that suggests a lot but maybe doesn’t specifically give people expectations, in the way that a term such as thrash would. A longer description can be read in our bio on our Facebook page.

3. What would you consider to be the high point of your career so far?

We’re really just getting started, but 2017 started with us getting 2nd place at the regional metal competition, despite not really being your average metal band. And then we were invited to open for Container’s LP release party which was topped off by Dutch stoner legends Komatsu, which was really cool. Of course, the incredibly positive feedback we’ve gotten so far has also been very welcoming!

4. Which three bands most influenced you?

At a certain point we decided to combine stoner/doom metal with post-rock/metal and we were really looking at Ufomammut and Isis at that point. I think Neurosis is the main 3rd band although certainly these days our influences are becoming broader and more eclectic. We want to keep things fresh and musically challenging for ourselves as we evolve through our existence as a band.

5. What are your plans for the near future?

Having just released our first EP the plan is to do shows throughout the Netherlands until the point comes where we feel ready to enter the studio and record a full-length. Hopefully by then we’ll be at the point where we can do (international) tours.

6. If there is anything you would like to add, the last words are yours.

Thanks for letting us do this introductory interview and to anyone reading this, please check us out, hope you like what you hear and please let us know what you think! Communication between musicians and listeners shouldn’t be a one-way thing.
