Madder Mortem & Co.013 Tilbug (The Netherlands)Madder Mortem, Vintersorg, Rotting Christ, Tristania 30 sept. 2001 First up was Madder Mortem. I only knew this band from the fact they are mentioned on doom-metal.com and they made a good impression on me; great female vocals by Agnete Kirkevaag! They played a really intense set showcasing their strange Doom-metal in a most convincing way. Besides that, their songs are very well constructed and they perform it extreemly well on stage. Highly recommended! Next in line was Vintersorg. Vintersorg has been a one-man project of an individual with the same name for some time, but recently he was joined by guitarist Mattias Marklund. On stage, these two are accompanied by three guest-musicians. This was a band I was really looking forward to see and they totally blew me away live! Fantastic live vocals/screams/grunts by Vintersorg himself (who also has joined Borknagar recently), while their music was played very tight and fast. Highly recommendable for those into bands like Fintroll and forementioned Borknagar. The following band was a band I never have been fond of: Rotting Christ. They could not impress on me stage either. I can image that fans of this band were not disappointed as they tried very hard, but it never grabbed me. Then finally main act, Tristania, came on stage. Joined by a new grunter and a new male singer (Morten Veland, who did vocals and guitars, left the band before the recording of their new 'World of Glass' album), Tristania stood on stage with no less then seven musicians. Unfortunately, it could not prevent them from not impressing me. Their performance was, aside from the classic female vocals by the always beautiful Vibeke Stene, never surprising. Also songs from their upcoming album were not very convincing. Pity, because I have seen them perform very well before. A last word for the dutch visitors who also attented a My Dying Bride gig in the Netherlands some time ago. While the sound in 013 was not good at that concert in februari (or so) this year, the sound was almost perfect now. I really enjoyed listening to every played note and beat. Great work by the technicians this time! - Roel Verhaak [ Back to gig reviews ] |
