Paradise Lost

United Kingdom - Active.

Description

Death/Doom

Originally one of the heaviest bands on the planet and one of the founders of the new Death/Doom style of the nineties, Paradise Lost created a number of absolutely iconic albums, including - of course 'Gothic' - before changing direction towards a Gothic Rock/Pop style. That transformation was largely complete with 1997's 'One Second', and it would be nearly 20 years before they returned to the heavy Gothic Death/Doom sound that they helped originate. Influential out of all proportion to their number of Doom releases, Paradise Lost need no comparisons - they are the originals.

Misc

It is commonly accepted that the album 'Gothic' kick-started the Gothic Metal genre label, though that may now be more synonymous with the romanticised Symphonic branch of the style, there are still plenty of bands working in the more brutal Death-derived version Paradise Lost initiated.

'Kerrang!' is a split with Candlemass, and the nu-dustrial bands Crowforce and Murder Inc..
