Doomy Olympics?Hello, and welcome to doom-metal.com,
Well, the Sydney Olympics are well underway and what an absolutely fantastic opening ceremony! As an Australian, it brought a tear to my eye (metaphorically speaking, ofcourse!) to see our great Cathy light the cauldron in absolutely outstanding fashion. For those of you that don't know our dear Cathy, she is the consumate hero of both white and aboriginal Australians alike. I can only imagine the hurdles she has faced and subsequently overcome to become the leader in her area of sport as an athelete, as a woman and as an aboriginal, and even if she were to finish dead last; she has done more than anyone else could possibly have asked of her. I was so curious as to who and/or what Sydney could do to top Atlanta with the sheer brilliant stroke of genius that it was to have Ali light their flame. I don't doubt that Ali touched more people worldwide than our Cathy, but I daresay that the WHOLE of Australia has a warm heart for Cathy and I wish her all the best in all that she sets out to achieve. My best wishes go out to all of your respective nations atheletes and may they do well (but may the aussie swim team totally shatter all your hopes mwuahahahahah!).
MY MY MY! haven't we come a long way in such a relatively short time! It took so long for our favourite genre of music to be properly recognised, always being mislabeled by any number of unappropriate labels to become one of the fastest growing areas of heavy music from the mundane to the brilliant. It is said that the best form of flattery is imitation, and my god! Don't we have enough of those damn imitators! Having said that, then it would possible to surmise that those that aren't imitators have risen far above the mediocrity and place themselves on pedestals the likes of which the imitators could never hope to achieve. We all miss the great bands, from the early Sabbath to Candlemass (old; ofcourse!) to the stunning sounds of In The Woods. We can only hope that from their ashes, the bands that are to follow show the same amount of integrity that their predecessors have done and continue to carry on the great tradition.Well, that was certainly cheesy! I've been listening to too much Ayreon methinks! So, to cap off, good luck to all the atheletes, to Sydney and to all the bands that the future possesses - Andy McVey [ Back to Articles ] |
